Waterside Worker Fined.
David Temple Birch, (53), waterside worker, was fined £20. in default two months' imprisonment at Townsville, when he pleaded guilty in the Cairns Police Court on Saturday, when charged before Mr. C. R. Noyes, SM., that he had in his possession one full bottle and one partly-full bottle of gin suspected of having been stolen. Senior-Sergeant T. J. Quinn, who prosecuted, said that Birch bad been detected by a Police Officer, who noticed the two bottles of gin protruding from defendant's pockets as he was leaving a ship which was berthed at the wharf. Mr. H. F. McLaughlin, who appeared for the defendant, said his client could give no reasonable account, of bis possession of the liquor, as he had no recollection at all of the circumstances.

Assault.— George Foreman answered to the information of Francis Robinson for assaulting him at Hindmarsh on December 2. It appeared that the defendant went to the prosecutor's house to pay money, and some words ensued. The defendant used very abusive words towards the prosecutor and his wife, and afterwards struck the former several times. He was fined 10s. and costs.

John Thorn was granted his 640 acres, possession given 20th Septem-ber 1831, for his services in capturing bushrangers q.v. Although there is no name given on the grant the land became known as 'Thorn's Farm'. Thorn died on 3rd August 1838, aged 46. The land then passed to his nine-year-old son, George Henry Thorn. George Thorn is not known to have used the land. He later moved to the family land in Goulburn. On 15th September 1856 the 640 acres of land were sold as 21 Agricultural Farms. James Bellamy of Pennant Hills purchased the entire grant, paying 900 pounds for it.
