ILLEGALLY DETAINING A DRAY.
Robert Jeffrey was summoned by Samuel Jeffcoat for illegally detaining a dray his property.
Mr. Thompson for the defendant.
The plaintiff deposed that he had been for a considerable time in the employment of Mr. A. S. Leslie, late proprietor of the North Ipswich Saw Mills, who owed him upwards of £100 for wages; demanded payment, and Leslie said he had not wherewith to pay, but offered plaintiff two horses, two drays, and some harness for the sum of £64, to be deducted from the wages due; agreed to take the goods, and got the receipt produced from Leslie; got delivery of the horses, harness, and one dray, and Leslie said defendant had the other away up country, but as soon as he returned it he would deliver it to plaintiff; Leslie had since sequestered his estate, and, although the dray was now in defendant's possession Leslie refused to interfere in the matter; demanded the dray from defendant who refused to give it up, stating that he had a lien on it.
The defendant deposed that he, in the first place, got a loan of the dray from Leslie, who subsequently requested him to lend him £33, which he did, taking the dray in question as part security; the £33 had never been returned, and he (defendant) held the dray as a pledge.
A. S. Leslie was summoned as a witness, but did not appear.
The Bench said there was no occasion for his evidence as they had made up their minds on the subject. They thought Leslie's conduct in the matter very discreditable, inasmuch as he first gave the dray as security and before he had redeemed it sold it to another person. Defendant was entitled to the dray until the lien was paid. Case dismissed.

DEATH OF MR. ARTHUR WOOLCOCK.
The many friends of Mr. and Mrs Arthur Woolcock will regret to learn of Mr. WoolcocK's death which occurred at an early hour yesterday, at his residence, "Miva," Denham street, (Says the Rockhampton Record of Saturday last) Mr. Woolcock, who was formerly for many years in the service of the Union Bank, and of the London Chartered Bank, in Townsville and Charters Towers, and other northern centres, has resided in Rockhampton for nearly twelve years, and during part of the time filled the position of accountant at the office of the Harbor Board. For a long tame, however, Mr. Woolcock's health has been most unsatisfactory, and during the past six months, such as to cause his friends serious uneasiness, so that his death was not unexpected. Mr. Woolcock comes of a well-known family, who have been resident in Queensland for many years. He was the second son of the late Rev. William Woolcock, and was born at Mivagissy, in Cornwall, 54 years ago. Mr. Woolcock leaves a widow and three sons, Mr. Raff of the Customs Department, Mr. Ken, who is at the Warden's Office at Herberton, and the youngest boy, Willie, who is at present on a visit to relatives at Toowoomba. Mr. Woolcock's sister is the wife of the Rev. Dr. Youngman, and his brothers Mr. William, formerly Postmaster here, and now at Chapters Towers, Mr. Richard, of Pengarrie, near Springsure, and Mr. John, barrister-at-law, Brisbane.
