A MAN of 61 is planning to guide a party of eight scouts to the summit of Mt. Crookneck, 1170ft.
(Glasshouse Mountains) on March 13 next year. He is Mr. H. Mikalsen, a railway guard, of Abbotsford Road, Mayne Junction, who first climbed the mountain 37 years ago. Since then he has not only climbed Crookneck six times, but has also climbed mountains in Norway, the highest being 4500 feet. 'Some people play sportt,' he said, 'but I would sooner be up on a mountain than doing anything else. I last climbed Crookneck 30 years ago, but I suppose it hasn't altered since then.'
The scout party will be guided by Mr. Mikalsen over the path on the northern side, which he first used 37 years ago. Organised by the 1st Bald Hills Troop Scout Master (Mr. C. C. Baines), the expedition next March will carry a 15ft. flag pole, brass plaque, and weatherproof metal case containing a log, to the summit. 'These, will commemorate Mr. Mikalsen and other climbbers of Mt. Crookneck,' Mr. Baines said yesterday. 'We will erect the pole with plaque and case attached, and will fly a pennant from the mast. 'Scouts will renew the pennant whenever it becomes too weather-beaten. The log, with pencil attached, is for the signatures of all who have climbed and will climb the mountain.' Mr. Baines added that he was anxious to contact the members of the Rowley and Clarke parties, who climbed Mt. Crookneck soon after Mr. Mikalsen's first ascent.
