THE "RAJAHGOPAUL" INQUIRY.
WITH reference to the inquiry recently instituted at the immigrant depot, re- specting certain alleged complaints of some of the immigrants by the Rajahgopaul, we are authorised to state that, so far as regarded the rumours of immorality on board, nothing whatever was elicited to justify such a report.

MRS. MARIA HOLGATE
Death At 94 Years
A ROCKHAMPTON PIONEER
After more than 70 years' residence in Rockhampton, during which time she watched the progress of the city with interest that was unabated even to the day of her death. Mrs. Maria Holgate died at her residence in Campbell-street on the morning of Sunday, September 10, in her ninety-fourth year.
The late Mrs. Holgate was a native of Killmurray, County Clare, Ireland, and she came to Australia with her parents in the ship, Rajah de Paul, at the age of nine years. When she was 16 she was married to the late Mr. Charles Holgate, who was then overseer of a station in the Burnett district. Mr. Holgate saw promise in the North and, in the days when a slab house in Rockhampton was almost a luxury, he and his wife made the journey to Rockhampton in a tilt cart and pitched their camp among some other tents at Depot Hill. It was at a time when Quay Street was the main street with East Street and Fitzroy-street just taking shape and most of the other roads little better than bush tracks.
On Tuesday, July 9, 1861, the late Mrs. Holgate purchased a copy of the first issue of "The Rockhampton Bulletin and from then onwards the "Bulletin was almost a part of her daily ritual. She remained keenly interested in public affairs particularly in the prospects of Mt. Morgan and its possible effect in providing work for the unemployed. It was a great affliction to her when the sight of one eye became impaired shortly before her death; otherwise she was always in full possession of her faculties.
The late Mrs. Holgate is survived by two sons. Mr. C. Holgate (Malchi), and Mr. W. T. Holgate (Rockhampton), and four daughters, Mesdames J. M'Lean (Townsville), J. Cockburn, J. T. Wicks, and H. M. Moffat (Rockhampton) and a great number of descendants to the fourth generation.

MAN DROWNED.-On Thursday, about noon, Mr. Petrie's Punt started with a load of shingles for Ipswich, and had only proceeded to Sandy creek, where Mr. R. Cribb's farm is situated, when a man named Brown, who was working the steer oar, called out to another man named Win. Woodcroft, who was pulling the starboard oar, that his handkerchief had fallen verboard. Woodcroft immediately leaned over the side of the punt, seized hold of the handkerchief, and in the act of transferring it from one hand to the other to place it on the gunwale, lost his balance, and fell into the river. Immediate assistance was rendered by his two companions, but unhappily proved unavailable, they being able only to succeed in catching a momentary glance of one of his arms. Search has been made to recover the body, but as yet without success. The poor man has left a wife and four young children, without any means of support and we would call the attention of the benevolent and charitable to aid them in their deep distress. Mr. Mason, Queenstreet, has kindly consented to receive subscriptions on their behalf.
