LOW ISLAND LIGHT.
Mr. A. Howgego, formerly keeper of Low Island lighthouse, who recently obtained an appointment in the Cairns pilos service, has been succeeded by Mr. H. Nebloe. The latter passed through Cairns on Thursday [??] by the Arawatta, and had, it is understood, had some experience in lighthouses on the coast of Scotland.

FAREWELL FUNCTION.
TO MR. A. S. HOWGEGO.
At an informal gathering in the office of the Harbour Master (Capt. J. Brewster) yesterday afternoon a wallet of notes was presented to Mr. A. S. Howgego by the staff and business people on the eve of his retirement from, the service. Captain Brewster, making the presentation, wished Mr. Howgego continued good health and happiness upon his retirement from the position- of magazine keeper at Stratford after 23 years' service. Captain Brewster said Mr. Howgego had been about 42 years in the service of the Harbours and Marine Department of Queensland and it was with great regret that they had to lose him through his having reached the age limit of 65 years.
"Having for the past 19 years been so closely associated with Mr. Howgego I can vouch for the fact that he has been a thoroughly reliable, conscientious, obliging, and faithful servant of the department, and speaking for myself and staff we very deeply regret his enforced retirement from our activities. He will be missed in many ways both by ourselves and others, and will be very hard to replace, but he knows he will still carry with him in the future our sincerest good wishes for his every happiness and welfare," added Captain Brewster.
Mr. R. C. Hodden, of the firm of Jack and Newell's, spoke on behalf of his company and other business firms of Cairns and district, and eulogised the work of Mr- Howgego on their behalf over a long period. They all greatly regretted his retirement but wished him every happiness for the future.
Various members of the staff of the Harbours and Marine Department spoke in similar strain.

Retires At 80
The Cairns Harbour Board will send a letter of appreciation to Mr. A. S. Howgego, of Stratford, who tendered his resignation as a labourer yesterday. He will retire as from Friday, October 24-the next day he will be 80 years of age.
The secretary to the board (Mr. J. Wyer) said at yesterday's meeting, "Notwithstanding his great age, this man was very active and most conscientious and lost no time through illness. Being an old sailor his work in splicing, rigging and seamanship was of much value to-the board. He was entrusted also with attending to the piles under No. 6 wharf under instructions from the superintendent of works (Mr. D. Thomson). The chairman (Mr. T. G. Dillon) said: "He was a good man. He deserves something."
