[[20933]] ANDERSON, Thomas, parents James ANDERSON & Margaret YOUNG
Georgetown.
FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT
October 15.

Two men have been blown-up in the St. George claim. One named Thomas Anderson died a few hours afterwards, and the other received very serious injuries.
The escort left for Townsville this morning, with 2588 ounces of gold.
Seventy tons of stone from the Sans Pauli reef have crushed 120 ounces gold, and 60 tons from the O'Donohue yielded 130 ounces.

Telegraphic. (1875, October 16). The Brisbane Courier (Qld. : 1864 - 1933), p. 5. Link to TROVE

About ten o'clock last Thursday morning two explosions, at an interval of a few seconds, were heard by some of the residents of the town, and the peculiar sound of the last drew then attention to the St George claim, situate across the river, from the straight shaft of which a thick body of smoke was rising. It was at once surmised that something serums had happened, and two constables were immediately despatched to render assistance if necessary. Upon their arrival at the claim a fearful sight met their view—a man without a stitch of clothing, charred and roasted, the skin peeling off in places, but walking about, able to speak, and perfectly sensible. They, with others who had hastened to the spot, covered him with a blanket to exclude the air, while the chemist, who was amongst the first arrivals, did all in his power to assuage the fearful agonies which the poor fellow was suffering. Within an hour from his appearance on the surface of the claim he became insensible, and was then conveyed to the hospital, where he expired the same afternoon, five hours after the occurrence.

It appears that there were four men working in the claim, two in the lowest level (70 feet), who escaped scatheless, and the deceased and his mate, Henry Proctor, about 30 feet up the underlay shaft, and the same distance south of the straight shaft. Having loaded a hole they lit the fuse, and retired some distance further up until the explosion took place. Close to where they had moved was the keg containing about 40lbs. of powder, unfortunately having no covering over it. It is conjectured that a portion of the burning fuse was shot into the powder, which immediately exploded, blowing the deceased many feet away and literally roasting him.

The moat extraordinary part follows. In total darkness he ran about 40 feet up the steep narrow underlay, climbed the ladder about 20 feet, then ran down to the tent about 100 yards off, where he was taken care of by those present until his removal to the hospital. His name was Thomas Anderson, and be has left a wife and family totally destitute, for whom, however, a subscription list has been opened, which is rapidly filling up. The deceased, sitting directly between Proctor and the powder, saved the former from certain death. As it is, he is considerably burnt and shaken, but now out of danger and recovering.
