When the death of Mrs. Sarah Rogers, the wife of Mr. James (William) Rogers, took place at their home, Ravenshoe, on Tuesday, July 3, a lady who had endeared herself to all by her charming and lovable disposition was removed from our midst. The sympathy of the whole district went out to that "grand old" man, Mr. James Rogers.
The deceased lady was exceptionally well known and respected throughout the State and at Emmaville, New South Wales, where she and her husband resided for some time after their marriage.
She was one of the band of early Tableland pioneers, whose pluck, tenacity and womanhood gave the necessary incentive to their menfolk to carry on and accomplish the founding of the vast country now known as the Tableland. Having suffered from indifferent health for some years, the late Mrs. Rogers was unable to take an active part in social life but at all times her assistance and experience were freely given and availed of. The late Mrs. Rogers was a wonderful worker for the Methodist Church both in Irvinebank and Ravenshoe, and donated the land on which the present Ravenshoe Methodist Church Stands; for many years she was the president of the Women's Guild also. At home her pet hobby was flowers. Her beautiful garden was characteristic of her sunny and cheerful disposition. She seemed able to bring out the beauty in all things, and always possessed a wide circle of friends.
The deceased lady was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. Dean, Warwick, Darling Downs, and was born in Manchester, England, in the year 1856. She came to Queensland with her parents and married Mr. James Rogers about 47 years ago, and has proved herself a true helpmate and devoted mother.
The late lady leaves her husband and two daughters, Esse (Mrs E. Muir) and Ethel (Mrs. Alf. Davis), all of Ravenshoe, to grieve.
The last solemn rites were performed at the Ravenshoe cemetery, by the Rev. C. Cheetham, assisted by the Rev. C. Everett (Herberton) on July 3. The floral tributes, telegrams and messages are ah indication of the popularity of the deceased, and included:-Loving Husband; Ethel, Alf and family; Lily and family; Maud and Ilma; Fred and Belle and family; Harold, Phil and children (Surat); Methodist Ladies' Guild; Gordon (Brisbane); J. His death certificate states that he was 63 years old making his birth in 1836. A story told by Les Davis
, son of Horace and Eda (nee WENNERSTEN) was that all three brothers arrived in Queensland from Canada. All three death certificates indicate that they all arrived in Queensland in 1866. The Southern Ocean
did arrive in 1866 but sailed from Portsmouth in the county of Hampshire in southern  England rather than Canada.
It has since been discovered that while the three boys came to Australia, their parents and at least two sisters, Eliza and Alice, went to Canada where all four died. This then is the reason there was some confusion about where the boys had emigrated from when they came to Queensland.
Greg visited the cemetery in Irvinebank (September 2015) and photographed all of the headstones, but there was no headstone for Margaret BOOCOCK
or John Edwin DAVIS or his brother George Spelling DAVIS
