THE LATE SUICIDE NEAR YASS.—Dr. Blake, coroner, hold an inquest at Wargeila (Yass district), on Friday last, touching the death of Jeremiah Crossley, a resident of that place. It appeared from the evidence given that the deceased, who was seventy-three years of age, was suffering from rheumatic pains ; on the previous night (Thursday) his wife bathed his legs with hot water and turpentine, and went to bed in the same bed as deceased ; shortly afterwards the deceased complained of the pain and said he would get up, and advised his wife to go and sleep with her daughter in another room ; she refused to do so ; the deceased got out of bed and made up a fire ; about two o'clock on Friday morning the wife was awakened by a noise like something falling ; thinking it was her husband, she got out of bed to look for him ; she went into the room where the fire was, but her husband was not there, and both doors of the room were open ; she called to him, but received no answer ; she then went outside to look for him and found him lying on the verandah with blood flowing from the left side of his head ; she called to her daughter and son for aid and the latter lifted the deceased on to a sofa ; a gun, the property of the son and which he had been using the previous night shooting opossums, was found on the verandah with one barrel discharged ; both barrels were loaded and at full cock when hung up from the beam by the deceased's son a few hours previously ; no one on the premises heard the discharge of firearms ; the deceased and his family were on good terms ; when complaining of the pain on the previous night he said he would rather make away with himself than bear the same pain as he had done on the previous Tuesday. The medical evidence went to show that death resulted from injuries to the brain, caused by a gunshot wound, and that it was possible for the deceased to have fired the gun himself with his foot. The jury returned a verdict that the deceased died from the effects of a gunshot wound, inflicted by himself.

This obituary appeared in the Yass Courier dated 18th July 1873. DEATH OF WELL-KNOWN TOWNSMAN. On last Tuesday Mr. Christopher Alt died at his residence the Yass Hotel, at the comparatively early age of forty-three and his funeral, which was largely attended by all classes, took place on Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Alt was for many years a carrier on the road, and was well-known as "Johnnie the German". By industry and thrift, he acquired a snug farm in the neighbourhood of Yass, which he cultivated successfully, and lately became landlord of the Yass Hotel. Not long after commencing hotelkeeping, he was attacked with illness, from which he suffered until the hour of his death, although medical practitioners both in Yass and Sydney were consulted. He was very generally respected and leaves a wife and seven children behind to mourn the loss of an attentive husband and father.
The Yass Courier says :-It is with much regret we record the death by drowning, of an interesting child, five years old, the son of Mr. Jeremiah Crossley, of Wargiela. It appears that on the morning of Friday, the 23rd instant, the child accompanied his sister, who is about seven years old, to head, some cows, and turn them in the direction of the house. The head of the Burrowa River is in the vicinty of tho house, and the little fellow sat down at the side of the water, where his sister left him for a few minutes. On her return she saw his body floating in the river and at once ran and acquainted her mother; --Mr. Crossley being from home at the time. The anxious parent on reaching the river, found that the body had sunk; several neighbours were shortly afterwards on the spot, but the body was not recovered for some hours.
