The marriage of William and Ann was recorded under the surname of THLE, which given the number of index entries under the surname of IHLE would seem to suggest that THLE was a mistake.

FATAL ACCIDENT NEAR ESK.
A very painful fatality occurred near Esk, on Wednesday night last. It appears that Mr. Thomas Macfarlane, an old and very much respected resident of Deep Creek on the Mount Brisbane homestead area, left the township of Esk on that evening, in company with a neighbour, Mr. H W. Thomson. When about ten miles from Esk the spring-cart in which the two men were driving came in contact with a log on the road and capsized, throwing the occupants to the ground. Mr. Macfarlane fell on his head with such force that death resulted shortly after. The cart also overturned, and fell on Mr. Macfarlane s shoulder. Mr. Thomson, who was also very considerably shaken by the fall, endeavoured to procure assistance, but, having lost his way, roamed about till near morning, and then walked about two miles further on to Mr. Browns residence and obtained help. The body of the dead man was placed in the cart, and taken home. The sad occurrence has cast quite a gloom over the neighbourhood, as Mr. Macfarlane was greatly esteemed in the district. He came to the colony over thirty years ago, and was well known in the Redbank Plains and Goodna districts, where he resided for sometime. He leaves a widow and a family, we believe, of three sons and three daughters, all of whom are grown up. Mr. A. H. Thompson, J.P., held an inquiry into the affair on the following day.

Mrs. Kate Thornton, whose father, Mr. Thomas Macfarlane, was one of the early pioneers of the Bryden district (then known as Deep Creek) has died at the age of 91 years. Mrs. Thornton was the widow of Dr. Philip Thornton who, for about 30 years, was the Medical Superintendent of the Ipswich General Hospital. They were married by Rev. Edwin Eldridge at Esk in April, 1902, Dr.Thornton being a widower with four daughters.
Before her marriage, Mrs. Thornton spent about seven years as a nurse on the staff of the Goodna Mental Hospital and then came to the Ipswich General Hospital where she stayed for a number of years, rising to the position of Matron. She gained a reputation as a very capable nurse. After the marriage the couple moved to Redcliffe for a couple of years and then returned to Ipswich when Dr. Thornton was appointed as the doctor in charge of the epidemic ward.
After the death of her husband about 25 years ago, Mrs. Thornton moved to Warwick-road where she had been living ever since.
Mrs. Thornton did not have any children. She had three sisters, Christine, Jane, and Mary; and four brothers, Andrew, Tom, John, James and William (who was drowned in 1877 at the age of three.) She is survived by Christine (Mrs. C. Goodair) and Jane (Mrs. J. Lumb), both of Ipswich.
Her four step-daughters, Mrs. M. McKenzie (Dee Why), Mrs. C. Elliott (Southport), Mrs. E. Foote (Ipswich), and Mrs. L. Foote (Southport) also are still liv!ing.
