'ASKED ME TO KEEP CASE OUT OF COURT'

Defective -W. H. Furlong told the Police Court yesterday that a Valley business manager had asked him to "straighten-up" a complaint he was investigating to avoid court action. He said the business manager, Leo Whittred, of the Hostess Biscuit Factory Warner Street, Valley, had told him: 'I'll be ruined.'
Furlong said he had been investigating a complaint by a youth that Whittred had molested him in daylight in the company's office after they had met casually in a soft-drink shop.
Whittred was remanded by Mr. George SM, until 2.30 pm, on March 12 on a charge — which he is contesting — of having unlawfully assaulted the youth on January 20.

Furlong said he had told Whittred that the youth alleged he had been in a shop in Ann Street at 2.15 pm, when Whittred spoke to him. He went with Whittred to the Hostess Baking Company, where, he alleged Whittred molested him.
Whittred had said: 'That's wrong. He asked me for a job and, we came round to the office, but I did not molest him.'
Furlong said Whittred finally admitted: 'Yes, I caught hold of him, detective. I have been very worried lately, and I don't know what came over me.'

For sentence
A Criminal Court jury yesterday found a Valley business manager guilty of an offence against an 18year old youth.
Leo Whittred, 45, had pleaded not guilty to a charge that at Brisbane, on January 20, 1953, he unlawfully and indecently assaulted a male person.
The Chief Justice remanded Whittred for sentence.

Not jailed for assault

A Valley business manager was given a two years, suspended sentence in the Criminal Court yesterday.
A jury has found the man, Leo Whittred, 45, guilty of having unlawfully and indecently assaulted a male person at Brisbane on January 20.
The Chief Justice said that in view of all the circumstances he would not send Whittred to jail. Mr. D. Casey (for Whittred) said Whittred would do all he could to rid himself of any malady, if he were not sent to jail.
His Honour ordered that the sentence be suspended on Whittred's entering into a £100 bond to remain under the supervision of a probation officer for two years.
