Death of
Mrs. J. Morgan, Sen.
Mother of Hon. A. Morgan.,
A Queensland pioneer, in the person of Mrs. Kate Morgan, relict of the late Mr. James Morgan, and mother of Hon. Arthur Morgan, M.L.C., President of the Legislative Council, died at about half-past 9 o'clock last night. Her husband, who for some time represented Warwick in the Legislative Assembly, predeceased her by 28 years. Mrs. Morgan had been residing with her youngest and only unmarried daughter, Miss L. Morgan, at Mascotte, Taringa, Brisbane, for more than 20 years past, and it was there that she breathed her last. The deceased lady was a native of Mullingar, county Westmeath, Ireland, and was in her 77th year. She came to Australia nearly 70 years ago, and lived for some years in Sydney, prior to her making her home with her husband at Talgai on the Darling Downs in 1850. Mr. Morgan at the time was managing Talgai station for Messrs. John and George Gammie, names which like the Morgans are closely associated with the history of the Downs. Mr. Morgan managed Talgai, which now is the .property of the Queensland Cattle Company, until the stock were dispersed by sale. Afterwards Mr. Morgan was connected with Messrs. Hood and Douglas at Talgai, and later at Fraser's Creek, and still later with the North British Australasia Company at Rosenthal, where Hon. A. Morgan was born. Subsequently he was appointed Government inspector of stock for the Darling Downs district, which position he held until 1868, when he purchased the " Warwick Argus " newspaper, which he owned until his death in 1879, when Mr. (now Hon.) A. Morgan, took it over. The deceased's widow removed to Taringa some time afterwards, and had resided there ever since. Mr. and Mrs. Morgan were married in Sydney in 1848. They had both come to Australia in the same vessel. They had a large family, of whom the following survive : Mr. Charles T. Morgan, Mackay ; Mrs. G. Hall, Brisbane ; Mrs. P. J. Whelan, Balmain, Sydney ; Mr. S. J. Morgan, ex-Mayor of Warwick ; Hon. A. Morgan, President of the Legislative Council and ex-Premier of Queensland; Mrs. John W. Stack, Brisbane ; Mr. Edward Morgan, of the Railway Department, Brisbane ; Mrs. Genrge B. Stack, Chatswood, Sydney; Mrs. A. C. Raff, Edgecliffe, Corinda ; and Miss L. Morgan, Taringa. All the above with the exception of Mr. C. T. Morgan and Mrs. G. B. Stack, were at their mother's bedside at the end. Mrs. Morgan led a quiet life during her later years, but she had a large circle of friends. In the pioneering days of the Downs, she was an active worker with her husband, and she is entitled to a foremost place in the list of the sturdy band of men and women who left the comforts of civilisation behind in order to assist in the development of what is now the most prosperous portion of Queensland. At the deceased lady's special wish, her body will he embalmed, and will be taken to Warwick by mail tram to-morrow, for interment bv the side of her late husband. All the members ot the family will be present at the funeral. Flags are flying at half mast from Government and municipal offices and business places in the city this morning as a mark of respect to the memory of Mrs. Morgan.
