The late Mr. Aberdein joined the service of Smellie and Coy. as a boy nearly forty years ago.
He made good progress through the various stages of the business ,being ultimately appointed warehouse manager, and subsequently a director of the Company.
Of a quiet, unassuming manner, he was esteemed by those who knew him. His widow is the daughter of the late Mr. F. M. Downes, who was a well-known monumental mason in Fortitude Valley.

A painful accident occurred on Wednesday at the Maryborough Sugar Company's mill at Tinana. Mr F. Tomson, well-known as one of our pioneer cotton planters, was in the sugar house when the centrifugals were about to be started. In putting the belt on the drum he made use of the end of a long rope lying handy, when the rope being caught between the belt, and the shaft was wound round the latter, and Mr Tomson becoming entangled in the coils of the rope was drawn up to the shaft and jammed against the wall, the result being that his legs were frightfully bruised and crushed. Fortunately, Mr Jamieson, the manager, had just previously stopped the engine, so that only the acquired impetus was on it, and on Mr Tomson becoming fixed, the motion stopped. We are glad to learn that, though severly injured, Mr Tomson is not considered in serious danger.
