Margaret BYERS was born with the surname of GANE, her mother's maiden name because she was born 14 months before her mother, Elizabeth Ann GANE married John Jones BYRES. She may have been adopted by John Jones or adopted the name BYRES later in life.

Mr. J. J. Byers, late Land Commissioner in the Hughenden district, died at Hughenden on Friday night last. The deceased was one of the pioneers of North Queensland, having been well known in the Port Douglas and Cooktown districts, where he was styled "Big Jack Byers," and It was a coincidence that the comrades of the Palmer River diggings were all big powerful men—Pat. Callaghan, Tom Leslie, Francis S. Baker, and others.
