Second Tragedy On Keppel Sands Road
Woman In Mt Morgan Party Killed
Rebecca Jane FULLER, daughter of William and Kathleen MacKAY.
THE outing of a Mount Morgan family ended in tragedy when Mrs John Fuller, 27, of Linedale Street, Mount Morgan, died late yesterday afternoon as a result of head injuries received in an accident on the Keppel Sands Road. It was the second fatality on this road during the week-end, a Rockhampton man having been killed on Sunday. Mrs Fuller was one of a party of 12 adults, three young girls, and fire children which had spent the New Year's week-end at Keppel Sands. With the exception of one man and a young girl, all the party were either members or relations of the MacKay family.
William James MacKay, who had brought a 2-ton truck from Mackay to visit his people at Mount Morgan, was driving the truck when the party left Keppel Sands about 6 p.m. to go home. The party was about three miles from Tungamull when MacKay pulled to his correct driving side to pass a bus also travelling to Rockhampton. Getting into some loose sand and dirt, the truck lurched to the side and Mrs Fuller, who, with her 9-weeks-old baby boy in her arms, was sitting on the side of the truck with her husband and some other members of the party, was thrown off the truck to the side of the roadway. Others on the side of the bus were thrown off and six were injured, but Mrs Fuller's baby was not hurt.
The driver's attention was quickly called and he stopped the truck. He hurried back and found Mrs Fuller, who was his sister, lying at the roadside unconscious and seemingly badly hurt. She received head injuries from which she died shortly afterwards.
OTHERS INJURED.
The others injured were-
John Fuller, 28, husband of the woman killed, abrasions on the back.
Sidney Gifford, 24, Kelly's Paddock, Mount Morgan, abrasions to both hands and knees.
Cathleen MacKay, 16, Linedale Street, Mount Morgan, sprained right ankle.
Francis MacKay, 13, Linedale Street, sprained left ankle.
Ellen Daniels, 24, married, River Street, Mount Morgan, abrasions on both knees, both hips, and left hand. Kevin Daniels, 2, River Street, contused wound on forehead.
All suffered from shock.
Her mother, two brothers, and four sisters were witnesses of the accident which caused Mrs Fuller's death.
Answering a call from Tungamull, the Rockhampton Ambulance hurried to the scene and brought Mrs Fuller to Rockhampton. The other injured people were brought to Rockhampton by Hopkins's Port Curtis bus, and received treatment at the Ambulance station. Nurse Davies, of the Rockhampton General Hospital staff, who was on the train from Emu Park to Rockhampton, alighted at Tungamull when informed of the accident and gave splendid aid until the arrival of the Ambulance, temporarily bandaging the injured.
The injured members of the party were subsequently taken to Mount Morgan by Ambulance, the Mount Morgan Ambulance car meeting the Rockhampton car about half-way on the journey.
