The many friends of Mr George Mackay, of Tableland, will regret to learn that he passed away after a comparatively short illness at Balcomba private hospital on the 11th inst. The deceased gentleman who was 64 years of age, possessed a bright cheery disposition, and his friends throughout Gladstone and the Port Curtis district were legion.
Mr George Young Mackay was born at Calliope, and was one of the early prospectors there engaged in gold mining when it was one of the principal fields in Queensland, and when it attracted hundreds of Chinese miners after alluvial gold.
He met with a serious accident on the field, when during a storm which disarranged the hauling gear, he was badly injured in an explosion in Old Bennedicts at 10 men gully. Trapped in the shaft he pluckily pulled out one fuse, but the other went off and he carried the marks of the explosion for the rest of his life.
The late Mr Mackay married Miss Griffiths, of Tableland, where he settled in later years after mining gave out, and he obtained his first lease of grazing land in 1918. Although the land was classed by many as too rough and mountainous for grazing the indomitable spirit of the settler and is now regarded as one of the best properties in the district.
He is survived by his widow and three children, Miss Dorothy Mackay, Messrs James and Herbert Mackay, who are all residing at "Callemondah." There are three sisters: Mesdames R. Lloyd, Gladstone, W. Coles, Brisbane, and E. Stonely, Brisbane, and three brothers, Messrs Angus Mackay, Calliope, Jim Mackay, McKinlay, and John W. Mackay, Brisbane, whilst two brothers William and Peter predeceased him.
