[[32536]] SMITH, Walter, parents Walter SMITH & Annie FRAZER
Another old 'land mark' (says yesterday's Chronicle) has been swept away by the hand of death, in the person of Mr. Walter Smith, who died at his residence on Tuesday, at the ripe age of 82 years. The deceased who was popularly known as ' Copper Smith,' came to Maryborough with his family in the sixties, and entered upon mining pursuits, his name being particularly associated with the early gold and copper mining operations in the Kilkivan district (the Black Snake and Mount Clara fields, the latter being named after one of his daughters). For some years past he had been living in comparative retirement, doing a little prospecting now and then, but during the greater part of his life he had been one of our most active mining pioneers.

DEATH OF AN OLD QUEENSLAND RESIDENT.

Another old landmark has been swept away by the hand of death, in the person of Mr. Waiter Smith, who died at his residence yesterday at the ripe age of eighty-two years, says the " Maryborough Chronicle " of the 9tb instant. The deceased came to Maryborough with his family in the sixties and entered upon mining pursuits, his name being particularly associated with the early gold and copper mining operations in the Kilkivan district (the Black Snake and Mount Clara fields, the latter being named after one of his daughters). For some years past he had been living in comparative retirement, doing a little prospecting now and then ; but for the greater part bf his life he was one of our most active mining pioneers. Mr. Smith has left behind him an aged widow and large grown-up family of sons and daughters to mourn his loss, the majority of the latter being in various parts of the state. He was father of Mrs. William Pattison, widow of the well-known Colonial Treasurer in Sir Thomas M'Ilwraith's Ministry, and of Mrs. Carl Feilberg, whose late husband was for many years editor of the " Brisbane Courier." Mrs. J. Manson and Mrs. Blunt, of this town are also daughters.
