John GANE
Mr. Justice Windeyer got a whiff of North Queensland conjugal devotion as he sat in the Sydney Divorce Court last week. Nearly eighteen years ago, John William Keeble and his wife Sophia kept a store and pub on the Hodgkinson River. They did not thrive particularly well, and John William trod the gullies betimes in search of the unminted metal. While away on one occasion, he alleges that Sophia forgot all about him and gave herself to drink and other evils. He, thereupon, packed her off with her father to Ravenswood. Last week, John William, who now keeps a store in Wilcannia, ascended the witness box and begged Judge Windeyer to set him free. His Honor, after hearing the weary tale, granted the the rule nisi. Sophia's maiden name was Gane. They were married at Ravenswood in 1871.
