Early on Saturday morning Constable Wass who was on duty near Wickham Park, found the dead body of a man lying in that park between the Gymnasium and the Trades Hall. On examining the body it was found that death was due to a bullet wound in the right side of the head, just above the ear. A six-chambered revolver loaded in five chambers, was found alongside the body, and it was evident that death had occurred within half an hour of the body being found.
A Townsville Sayings Bank deposit book hearing the name of "H. Stoward" was found on the body. Later the body was identified by Constable M'Kenzie, of Kangaroo Point police station, as that of Henry Stoward, about 65 years of age, and a widower. His address is not known, but he has a brother-in-law residing at South Bingera, in the Maryborough district.
