RICHARD HUNT ARRIVED in the Colony aboard the Morley on 10 April 1817. Fortunately for the convicts on board, the Morley was a fast ship and she made the voyage in 110 days, beating the previous record of l2l days set by the Coromandel in 1802. The Morley left England on 18 December 1816 and reached the Cape in 62 days. After spending a week in port there it made Port Jackson in 41 days. Apart from being a smart sailor it had an excellent health record. Later on its fifth passage with convicts, it brought whooping cough to Sydney as several cases of this illness were among children of soldiers aboard. As a result of failure to report the plague immediately it spread rapidly throughout the Colony, causing the deaths of several children.
Richard, born on29 March 1797, was 20 years of age when he arrived in the Colony. But we must go back to the morning of 4 October 1815.
Richard and his older brother, William, were walking along a London street, one carrying a basket, the other a handkerchief. They happened to meet two police officers. Police Officer John Limbrick was a suspicious character so he asked the young men what they had there.
"Wine, from Sadler's Hall", they told him. They went on to explain that their father was the Beadle at the Hall and the wine was a 'perk' which belonged to him.
The Police Officers were not satisfied with this explanation so they took Richard and Vitliam into custody, marched them down to the office and searched them.
According to Police Officer Limbrick they found four silver table spoons on Richard, wrapped up in a piece of paper which was a leaf from one of Sadler's Hall account books. (Not very bright, Richard!) They found a key on William's person. The other Police Officer, Walter Lee, found a duplicate pawn ticket) for a silver spoon on William which showed the spoon had been pawned at Mr Essex's in Aldergate Street.
Well, this was sufficient evidence for the good police officers to have both Richard and William indicted.
They were tried at the Old Bailey on 26 October 1815 at the Sessions of delivery of the gaol of Newgate which began on October 25.
Both were indicted for stealing on 4 October, in the Parish of St Vedast, Foster Lane, Ward of Farrington, within the City of London, the following items;
4 silver table spoons (value fl)
12 bottles of wine (value f2)
12 glass bottles (value 2/-)
all belonging to the "Wardens or Keepers and Commonality of the Mistery or Art of Sadlers"; and also other similar spoons and bottles (of the same value) belonging to Giles Hancock.
They were additionally indicted for stealing in the same Parish on 3 October further items from Sadler's Company - (2 silver tea spoons, value fl and 3 similar spoons of the same value) - belonging to Hancock.
Police Officers John Limbrick and Walter Lee gave their evidence; then Robert Essex, the Pawnbroker testified: 'I am a Pawnbroker, in Aldersgate Street. I produce some spoons, pawned at my house, originally there were two pawned, in September and on 3rd of October, and one was released, and a new duplicate given for the remaining one.'
Sarah Lucas was the next witness. This is of special interest for it tells us why William Hunt was at Sadler's Hall on the evening of 3 October. This is Sarah Lucas' evidence;
'I am Hall-Keeper to the Sadler's Company. I know the prisoner, William Hunt. In consequence of his father's infirmity as Beadle, he was permitted to do his duty. On 3rd October, there was a dinner at the Hall. I have looked at the four spoons produced by the Officers, and know them to belong to the Company; before they were lost, they had all the Company`s arms on them.'
