THE IPSWICH RAILWAY ACCIDENT.
(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
IPSWICH, March 16.
A magisterial inquiry into tho accident which occurred on Tuesday last at Little Ipswich, and resulted in the death of Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Henry, was held to-day before the police Magistrate. Mr. Cardew appeared on behalf of the Commissioner for Railways and the other officials , Mr. Chubb watched the case in the interests of the Henry family ; and Mr. Drysdale appeared for the cab-driver, Donald M'Neill. M'Neill was present at the commencement of the proceedings, but he left the court when the first witness had been examined. Messrs. W. A. Cross (Engineer for Existing Lines), J. F. Thallon (Traffic Manager), and R. T. Darker (Locomotive Superintendent) were also present throughout the inquiry. The following evidence was adduced:-
Richard Bradfield, a wheelwright, residing in West Ipswich, deposed that on the 13th instant he was in his shop at the corner of Brisbane street and Bridge-lane ; about twenty minutes past 5 o'clock he saw a cab some twenty-five yards from the crossing going towards the One-mile Hotel ; saw Donald McNeil driving ; witness then saw the train coming down the Fassifern line towards town ; it was about eighteen or twenty yards from the crossing ; the cab was going at about the same pace as the train ; saw the cab run into the engine ; the cab and its occupants were thrown over ; before the collision he ran out and held up his hands and shouted ; the Cabman took no notice of his action : he was looking in the direction of Henrys place ; witness arrived on the scene just alter the carriages passed ; it appeared to him that the cab pole struck the boiler about 10ft. from the front of the engine ; this threw the cab backwards and turned the horses' heads up towards the hill, besides turning the cab over ; he picked the little boy up and carried him into his house ; saw Mrs. Henry lying on the ground ; when he came back he gave a hand to put Mr. and Mrs. Henry into a cart, both of them were unconsious ; Donald McNeill crawled out from under the cab ; heard the usual whistle of the train at the Little Ipswich platform ; one of Hancock's employees drove the cart away with the Henrys ; one of the horses had its inside torn out, and a man, named Smith, killed it ; the other horse had its hind foot torn off and otherwise injured and a constable shot it ; did not see any other vehicles near the crossing : witness said to the little boy, " Why did not your father see tho train?" he answered, "I said, ' There's the train, father,' but it was then too late to stop."
