MR. H. A. BARRATT.
One of Herberton's oldest residents, Mr. Hubert Ashton Barratt, died at the age of 66 on Tuesday, July 10, at the Mt. Isa Hospital. The funeral left the Catholic Church of The Good Shepherd on Tuesday afternoon.
Born at Wondecla, near Herberton, he spent most of his life around that district, with the exception of the past five years, when he lived in Bennydale, North Island, New Zealand, returning to Australia last year.
Mr. Barratt was a well-known identity in the mining field of Herberton and district, having been a shareholder in the Empress, You and I, Wild Irishman, and as having owned the Mt. Nolan tin mine. He was also the owner of the racehorse Nojah. Hubie was a keen follower of sport and was always to be seen on the football field.
Mr. Barratt is survived by his widow and three daughters, Lillian (Mrs. Cyril Collins, 9 School road, Mt. Isa, Ellie (Mrs. Ronald McClelland, Machan's Beach, and Rita (Mrs. Rita Duggan, Mt. Isa).

Funeral of George Crow.
The body of the late George Crow, the victim of the mining accident at "The Cobby" tin mine, was brought in to Herberton, and conveyed to the morgue. The funeral moved from the hospital at 5 p.m. on, Monday, and was followed by a large number of miners and friends. The coffin was covered with flowers and wreaths.
The chief mourners walking immediately after the hearse, were The Barrett brothers. Maurice and Nap (the two mates of the deceased) and Hubert, and Othello Barratt, who had been formerly connected with deceased in other mining ventures, also half a dozen other one time mates of deceased, during the many years he has been in the district. About, a score of friends, miners and townspeople, followed on horse back, and Mr. Adair (partner with the Barretts in a couple of mines) conveyed other friends in his car. Mr. Rowan, Church of England, performed the last sad rites.
This is the first accident of its kind, a mine explosion, for a number of years, the mineral field in the Herberton district luckily having been singularly free of fatal accidents. The last was three or four years ago, when Johnson fell down "The Nolan" (belonging to the Barrett Bros.) when Hughie McDonald, who also helped this time, helpped to recover the body. Mr. Williams, Mining Inspector, will arrive from Mareeba by. Tuesday's train to inspect "The Cobby" mine, and report on the explosion and accident.
