Written by my mother Susan following her inital research in mid 1980.
On 17 Oct 1861, the 'Saldanha' sailed from Plymouth with 498 passengers on board. Among these were the allen family, James (44) his wife Eleanor (44) and their children Charles Taylor (23) & his wife Mary, Thomas (20), Eleanore (13), James (10), Sarah (7) and Moses (4), from Oldham, Lancashire. The ship arrived in Moreton Bay on 29 Jan 1862 and the records show that Charles and Mary continued on aboard the 'Clarence" to settle at Maryborough. Under the Land Orders System a land grant, the sum of 36 pounds, was paid to George Raff & Co, Shipping agents, Brisbane on 26 Feb 1862 being payments for passage for James & Eleanor Allen. James is recorded as starting his new life as a miner.
On 16 Jan 1867 land was purchased for 76 pounds, payment being 9 pound 10 shillings per annum until 1874 - perhaps with the original intention of growing cotton. On 25 July 1868, 76 acres of land on the Mary River, near Munger was registered to James Allen. This was the family property known as 'Allendale". James had his own sawmill and is said to have built the first steam driven engine to operate in the Mungar timber mill.
On16 Sept 1871 James Allen died from peritonitis in the Maryborough hospital at age 53 after making his will on the same day. He was buried at Allendale by Henry Armitage (son-in-law), a Baptist Minister, also his next door neighbour. Executors of the will were, his son, Charles and Henry Armitage, He left his estate to his wife, Eleanor, to be held in trust for James and Moses until her death. Eleanor lived there for over 40 years.

Obituary
At 3 o'clock on Sunday morning there passed away at the residence of his son at Freestone a very old resident in the person of Mr Henry Smith aged 79 years. Mr Smith-who was a shipmate of our esteemed townsmen, Mr Harry Chandler-had been in Queensland exactly 50 years on Thursday last, having arrived at Brisbane on October 1, 1858 from his native place, Bridgwater, Somerset (England). A bricklayer by trade he came to Warwick in the same year in connection with the building of the old lock-up in Albion Street and the lock-up at Leyburn. He also assisted in the erection of several other brick buildings in the town, amongst them the building now occupied by the 'Argus'. Shortly after arrival he took up farming at Freestone, where he had resided ever since. For some years past he had not been in the best of health and was compelled to take up a lighter occupation and had charge of the post office at Lower Freestone for some years up to the time of his death which was the result of a general breakup of the system. Deceased, whose wife pre deceased him some 12 years, leaves a grown-up family of five sons and four daughters as follows. Mrs C. Brunckhorst (Warwick), Mrs W. Noble (Freestone), Mrs H. Eastment (Sladevale) Miss Annie Smith, Messrs T. Smith (Freestone) William Smith (Allora), James Smith (Glengallon), Walter Smith (Freestone) and Alf Smith (Mount Marshall). There are also 60 grandchildren and 12 great children-Warwick Argus, 10th of October 1908
Henry Smith wrote his will on 20 September 1908, witnessed by his son-in-law H. T. Eastment and grandson Charles Smith. He signed in a shaky, wandering hand. Henry left the farm at Smith's corner to his youngest son, Tom, who had been working on the farm all his adult life.
Henry died his home at Freestone aged 79 of influenza, "catarrhal colities" and general frailty, on October 4th, 1908. He had been unwell for about two months. He had been 50 years in the colony on October 1, 1908. At the time of his death he left five sons, four daughters, 60 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
