A 75-YEAR-OLD woman and her husband, 81, walked out of a private hospital yester- day "for a few minutes."

The woman, Mrs. Lillian Peel McKie, of The Palms Private Hospital, Shafston Avenue, Kangaroo Point, received a compound fractured left leg, head injuries, and a probable fractured left arm. Her husband. Francis, escaped injury. Year in hospital They had been convalescing in the hospital for the last 12 months. ART SHOW TO STAY LONGER
Exhibition of French and British contemporary art at the Queensland National Art Gallery will be kept open to the public until Sunday afternoon, October 14. The exhibition was brought to Brisbane by The Courier-Mail, and by the courtesy of the trustees exhibited at the Art Gallery. October 14 will be the final day of viewing as on the following day the pictures and sculptures must be packed for return to Europe. The exhibition time has been extended because of the gratifying attendance of art lovers. Art lovers agree that it is one of the most important exhibitions ever shown in Brisbane. The annual exhibition of the Royal Queensland Art Society will be opened by the Governor (Sir Leslie Wilson) In the Canberra gallery on Tuesday afternoon, October 16. That will be followed by a oneman exhibition of paintings by Mr. Arthur Murch, of Sydney, a fore- most landscape, artist, at one time chief assistant in the studio of the famous G. W. Lambert. Later in November there will be an exhibition of paintings by Mr. Travis McKie and Mrs. Clotilde-Highton, both of Brisbane. Mr. McKie studied in London for some years. Eight of his water colours were shown in Brisbane last year, when he was guest artist at the annual exhibition of the Half Dozen Group of Artists.
Helped With Murals at "Empire"
A young Queensland artist, Mr. Travis McKie, who has spent the last three years and eight months furthering his studies in London, returned to Brisbane by the Orient liner Ormonde yesterday. He spent periods at the Chelsea Polytechnic School and the Kennington Art School, London, and he was for 18 months associated with the late Captain Will Longstaff. Together they did the mural decorations for the Australian pavilion at the Empire Exhibition at Glasgow. He said that his main interest was centred in diorama work, which is the representation of scenes, a mode of painting and of scenic exhibition in-vented by Messrs. Daguerre and Bouton. It produces a far greater degree of optical illusion than the panorama, and is suitable for architectural and scenic views as well as for landscape.
