Henry DRANEY
Mid-day on Saturday that well known old Toowoomba identity, Mr. Henry Draney, solved the eternal enigma. He died at Hobbs Street, Auchenflower in the residence of his son, Mr. R. Draney, who is post-master Toowong. The deceased, who had reached the ripe old age of 89, had a varied and eventful career. An Irishman by birth, it was appropriate that he should have just seen the light on the feast day of his beloved country's great patron saint. He was born on March 17, in the year of 1835. As a member of the famous 11th Hussars he went through the privations of the Crimean War. Landing at Balaclava on May 24, 1855, he subsequently played a not inconspicuous part in the siege of Sebastapol, which dragged on through 11 weary months. On July 12, 1857, he was back again in England. Peace had been declared. It was about 62 years ago that he took it into his head to come to this country on the sailing vessel Young Australia. He landed in Queensland, and eventually settled in Toowoomba, in which city he resided for 57 years. In all Mr. and Mrs. Draney the latter dying some 10 years ago reared a family of 12 children, 11 sons and a daughter. The deceased, who is to receive burial in Toowoomba, will be mourned by a whole host of relatives and friends.
