Feeney Family Story
In an email on the 24th of July, 2015, Ray Feeney tells me that he has found an English census for 1841 which shows that Edward was born in Ireland 1815-16. Ray has yet to find other evidence that would show that this is true.
Serious Accident.-At a terrace of buildings in course of erection in Bourke-Street, Surry Hills, near Arthur-street, an accident of a very serious nature occurred yesterday afternoon, shortly after 2 o'clock, when two men, one named Daniel Williams, a labourer, aged 29 years, and Edward Feeney, a plasterer, aged 50 years, were the suf-
fers. The two men were working together on the fourth stories of the houses - Feeney plastering, whilst Williams carried the materials to him. Williams had just brought a load up to Feeney, when one of tbe padlocks of the scaffold gave way, which caused the scaffold to fall, and the unfortunate man with it. Both men were picked up, placed in a van, and at once convoyed to the Infirmary, where they were admitted. Dr. Halket, who was immediately in attendance, examined them, and found Williams to be suffering severely from concussion of the spine, whilst Feeney had sustained injuries and bruises to his back. They were also suffering greatly from schock, having fallen from a considerable height.

A MAGISTERIAL inquiry was held at the Police Office yesterday morning, touching the death of a man named Thomas Finney, when the following evidence was adduced :— Mary Schmidt, wife of E. C. Schmidt, boarding-house keeper, Russell-street, deposed: Deceased has boarded at my house since the month of July last; he has been in good health with the exception of drinking heavily off and on ; he was a plasterer by trade ; he was drinking heavily last week, and did not attend to his work ; be was a widower, and has three children ; he told me he had money, and I think it is in the bank ; he was about forty years of age. Dr. Armstrong deposed : On the afternoon of Sunday last, I was sent for by Mrs Schmidt, and went to the boarding-house, in Russell-street; I there saw the deceased Thomas Finney ; he was very ill with violent retching and shaking, and all the indications of excessive drinking, which he told me he had been doing for the last fortnight ; I prescribed for him ; yesterday morning he came to my surgery ; he appeared rather better ; I saw him again in the afternoon walking about tbe streets ; about 9 o'clock at night I was sent for to go and see him, which I did immediately, and on reaching the house found him dead ; I attribute his death to delirium trcmens, the result of excessive drinking.

Thomas Gallagher was summoned by Edward Feeney for committing an assault. Mr. Chubb appeared for the plaintiff. The plaintiff was walking along Brisbane- street with defendant's daughter (to whom he was paying his addresses) about ten o'clock on the evening of the 15th, when the defendant rushed up to him, and struck him a blow on the head with a stick, cutting through his hat. He put up his hand to defend himself, then Gallagher struck him on the wrist. On his attempting another blow plaintiff seined defendant and threw him down, taking from him the stick, and told him that he had better go away, or he would suffer for it. Defendant then went away a short distance, and picked up some stones to throw at the plaintiff, one striking him on the head, in consequence of which he suffered some pain for two or three days after. Mary Ann Gallagher corroborated the plaintiff. The defendant stated that he objected to the plaintiffs addresses, and would as soon his daughter have a Chinaman as him. Fined 1s., with 4s. 6d. costs.

A man named Edward Feeney died at Roma, on the 6th instant, from the effect of an overdose of morphia, administered while he was suffering from excessive drinking, The deceased was a bricklayer. The editor of the Ipswich Observer expresses his belief that the unfortunate man is a brother of Thomas Feeney, whose death at Toowoomba from delirium tremeim was reported in our issue of Wednesday, October 6.
OPENING OF THE HOMESTEAD AREAS. (1875, October 14). The Darling Downs Gazette and General Advertiser (Toowoomba, Qld. : 1858 - 1880), p. 3. Link to TROVE
A magisterial enquiry -on the death of Edward Feeney was commenced, yesterday, by John Murphy, Esq. The deceased was a bricklayer, residing in Roma ; it appears from the evidence that he came home on Wednesday , night, in an intoxicated state ; his wife gave him a dose of morphia in some gin,' to quiet him, as he was very excited, and in & short time afterwards he died. Dr. De Leon, who was called in before the unfortunate man's death, gave it as his opinion that death was caused by an overdose of morphia, combined with delirium tremens ; he also stated that he had attended deceased for delirium tremens some months ago. The enquiry was adjourned for the production of further evidence.
