MAGISTERIAL INQUIRY.
Yesterday Mr. R. D. Neilson, J.P., conducted a magisterial inquiry into the circumstances connected with the death of Mrs. Matilda Smith, whose body was found in Oxley Creek on December 30 last. Senior Sergeant Clark questioned witnesses.
Mrs. Desame Mary Trotter stated that deceased was her mother. On December 20 Dr. Love was called in and attended to deceased, who complained that she felt unwell. Alter taking the medicine prescribed by Dr. Love, she appeared to be very much better Dr. Love on a previous occasion said deceased was suffering from melancholia. On the evening of December 27 deceased had tea with her husband, and witness and witness's husband. She then appeared to be cheerful and in good health at 5 o'clock. On the following morning deceased came into witness's room. She was fully dressed, and said she was going for a little walk to get an appetite. Deceased then left the room, and witness did not again see her alive. Witness did not notice any change in her mother's manner ; had she done so she would hare prevented her from going out. Deceased was a native of Somersetshire, England, and had been in Queensland for forty-five years, and was 65 years of age.
George Trotter, storekeeper, residing at Sherwood, and husband to the previous witness, gave similar evidence. When his wife informed him at 8 o'clock on December 28 that her mother had not returned he made an unsuccessful search for her, and then reported the matter to Constable Buckley. On December 30 witness went to Oxley Creek in company with Constable Buckley, where he saw and identified the body of deceased. Witness could not assign any reason for the occurrence. At times deceased was very depressed.
Jack Donaldson, labourer, residing at Taringa, said on December 30 witness and Ralph Evans and Joseph William Crocker were bathing in Oxley Creek, when they found the body of a woman, fully dressed, with her hat on, floating in the creek. Witness and his companions removed the body to the bank, and witness remained there until Constable Buckley and George Trotter arrived. George Trotter identified the body as that of Mrs. Smith.
Ralph Evans, Joseph Wm. Crocker, and Constable Buckley also gave evidence, and the inquiry concluded.
