(17704) OWEN, Charles Alfred, parents Charles OWEN & unknown
ASSASSINATION OF MR. OWEN, OF YANDILLA.

On Saturday last our community was startled by the intelligence that on the previous evening Mr Owen, of Yandilla, had been shot dead while returning from Leyburn to his residence at Yandilla.

It appears that the lamented gentleman had been holding Court at Leyburn on that day in the absence of the Police Magistrate, and while driving home in his buggy, accompanied by the Revd. Mr Thackeray, of Cambooya, a horseman rode up behind the carriage, and, placing a gun close to Mr Owen's head, blew out his brains, and immediately made off. Mr Thackeray was so surprised at the report of the shot, the body falling forward, and the horses bolting, that he can scarcely remember what took place : the murderer was not identified by him.

Owing, however, to the indefatigable exertions of Sub-Inspectors Harris and Murphy there can be no doubt but that the deed will be brought home. A man named Ritchie, who had formerly been in the service of Mr Owen, was heard to use threats on several occasions against Mr Owens in consequence of having been muleted of some twenty pounds for bad performance of work at Yandilla in the erection of some huts. On the day in question (Friday), a man named Hayes was sentenced by Mr Owen to a penalty of 40s for some misdemeanour, and Ritchie was heard to say, when seen loading a pistol, that it was intended for Hayes for the purpose of blowing out Mr Owen's brains, consequently, on the murder being committed, Sub-lnspector Harris apprehended Ritchie on suspicion.

Ritchie's wife, on the constables calling at his residence in Leyburn, denied his being at home; the constables found him inside under the bed with his beard and whiskers shaved clean off to prevent his identification in the event of his having been seen while perpetrating the bloody deed. Moreover, it appears that between 5 and 6 o'clock on Friday evening Ritchie was seen riding out on the Yandilla road, and meeting a boy named Clay enquired of him if Mr Owen had passed, on being told that he had Ritchie followed the tracks of the buggy, and the murder occurred some two miles beyond this meeting and about six miles out of Leyburn.

Ritchie must have contemplated the deed for some time past, as he has been seen practising at a paper target fixed on a tree. He was formerly in the service of Mr Whitchurch, of Felton, whose life he also threatened, and Mr Whitchurch was glad to get rid of the fellow. Hayes was not apprehended up to Sunday last, but it is doubtful whether he is implicated.

Mr Owen was highly esteemed for his gentlemanly unassuming character; he was recently admitted as a partner in the station of which he has had the management for many years. He has left a widow, but no children ; he was married to the daughter of Mr John Campbell, of Redbank. His untimely fate is universally regretted and lamented.

(Since writing the above, we have been favored with the following particulars from Dr Burke, who had just arrived from Yandilla. The inquest is expected to close this day, and from the evidence there seems not the slightest doubt but that Ritchie will be fully committed for wilful murder. A mate of Ritchie states that he heard him say a week before the occurrence, that if he did not get the money he would have Mr Owen's life. The lamented gentleman's death must have been instantaneous, as the ball passed through the back of the neck into the mouth. He was buried at Yandilla on Monday last.)

FURTHR PARTICULARS— Sub-lnspector Murphy arrived from Yandilla between 9 and 10 o'clock last evening, and informs us that the inquest closed this morning. There were seventeen witnesses examined, the whole of whose evidence corroborated the facts as above, and that Alexander Ritchie was fully committed for wilful murder, and William Button and Reuben Thacker have also been committed as accessaries before the fact.

(54161) CAMPBELL, Rebecca Elizabeth, parents Robert CAMPBELL and Rose GONSARLUS
CROUCH. Rebecca Elizabeth.— A tribute of love to the memory of my darling Wife and our Mother, who fell asleep December 9th. 1938.
She bade no one a last farewell, and said good-bye to none,
The heavenly gates were open, and a
loving voice said. "Come."
You can only have one mother,
So patient, kind, and true,
No other, friend in all the world
Could be so true to you.
If all the world deserts you,
To her you can turn,
Cherish and love her while you may,
For you never know
How much you'll miss her
Until she's called away.
Inserted by her loving husband and daughters.

CROUCH.— tn loving memory of my dear Mother and Mother-in-law, Rebecca Elizabeth, who passed away on 9th Dec., 1938.
Her nature you could not help loving
Her heart purer than gold;
To those who loved her and knew her
Her memory will never grow cold.
Inserted by her loving son and daughter-in-law. Vic, Heather, and family.

CROUCH. — In loving memory of our dear Mother, Mother-in-law, and Grandmother, who departed this life the 9th December.
If I had all the world to give,
I'd give It, yes, and more,
To see my dear mother's face,
Come smiling through the door.
Inserted by her loving son, Gilly, daughter-in-law, Ivy, and two grandchildren, Roy and Irene.
