DEATH OF MRS. M. A. ROSETTA.
Mrs. Mary Anne Rosetta, one of Brisbane's oldest inhabitants, died yesterday at the residence of her son, Mr. A. Sparkes, in Leichhardt-street, Spring Hill. Mrs. Rosetta, then Mrs. Sparkes, arrived in Brisbane so long ago that the date has quite escaped the memory of her friends, but it is known to have been more than fifty years ago. Mrs. Rosetta was a native of London, and on arrival in Australia she, with her first husband, settled in Sydney. Two or three years later they removed to Brisbane. Mrs. Rosetta was engaged in grocery business in Queen-street for some years, but this was relinquished somewhere about 1858. Mr. Sparkes, sen., had then been dead some years. During her residence in Queen-street an incident took place which showed Mrs. Rosetta's strength of mind. It seems that a burglar, taking advantage of the lady's then state of widowhood, forced an entry to her premises in the dead of night. Unfortunately for him, however, his operations awakened the proprietress, who boldly came upon the scene, and seizing him, held him until the late Captain Wickham came to her assistance. The captain remarked at the time that if the gentle set of Queensland were all like Mrs. Sparkes policemen would not be required at all. In about 1860, having married again, Mrs. Rosetta took the Freemasons' Hotel, in Albert-street. Here some six years later Mr. Rosetta died, and shortly afterwards Mrs. Rosetta went out of business for good. At the time of her death she was in her 81st year, though she had suffered from none of the ills to which old age is usually subject, and in proof of this it is related how only a week ago last Wednesday she walked from Leichhardt-street to Petrie-terrace, thence to Bowen Hills, and then back home again. She had been suffering from bronchitis since Saturday last, and to this complaint she succumbed at 11 a.m. yesterday. The funeral takes place this afternoon, and the body will be interred at the General Cemetery, Toowong.
