HALL.—The friends of the late Mrs. Jane Hall, relict of the late Thomas Hall, are respectfully invited to attend her funeral, which will leave her late residence East Warwick at 11 a.m. THIS DAY for the Warwick Cemetery.

MRS. JANE HALL

The death of Mrs. Jane Hall, relict of the late Mr. Thos. Hall, which took place at her late residence "Leslie Villa," East Warwick, on December 17, severed another of the few remaining links connecting the present with the pioneering days of the Darling Downs. The late Mrs. Hall was born in Inverness, Scotland, on May 25, 1855. She was a granddaughter of Lady Jane Rose, of "Home Rose'" a beautifully situated estate on the bank of the River Nairn. Deceased's father, Mr. Wm. Tulloch, was the rightful heir to this estate, and no doubt had he remained in Scotland he would have inherlted extenslve interests in this wealthy estate.

Mrs. Hall made the voyage to Australia with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Tulloch, in the sailing ship "Rajahsteen." After six months on the high seas the "Rajahsteen" arrived at Moreton Bay in 1859. The Tulloch family then proceeded to the Downs via Spicer's Gap. This Scottish pioneer family made the journey—which occupied six weeks to this new EI Dorado in a bullock dray. Apart from riding on horseback, bullock drays were the only means of conveyance when the Tulloch family arrived in the colony 80 years ago.

Mr. Tulloch shortly afterwards acquired the well known "Glencairn" property, where Mrs. Hall spent her early life. In after years when the railway was built to Killarney the stopping place for this centre was named Glencairn, as suggested to the department by the late Mr. Tulloch. "Glencairn" is of historic interest to Scotsmen and their descendants in the Warwick district. It was at this home that the initial meeting was held which resulted in the inauguration of the Warwick Caledonian Society. Members of the Tulloch family, including Mrs. Hall, have always been keen supporters of the society. Mr. Alex Tulloch, a brother of deceased, was a stalwart of the society, and for mant years proudly carried the Scottish Standard as the head of processions to Queen's Park, where he invariably figured as a successful competitor in Highland events. The homestead block of the original "Glencairn" property is still owned by members of the Tulloch family.

Mrs. Thos. Hall married in 1874 The happy occasion was a double wedding that of Thomas and his brother William wedded to two sisters of this Tulloch family. Shortly after Mrs. Thos. Hall's marriage, 64. years ago, she went to reside at Upper Emu Greek where her husband had established a sawmill. Cedar cut at Mr. Hall's mill was used to the erection of the Presbyterian Church, Warwick. The young couple later resided in a home where the present township of Emu Vale is situated. During the time the late Mrs. Hall resided at Emu Vale, her husband, together with a gang of aborigines, constructed a trafficable road to the mill. The greater portion of this road is still in existence. At that time a tribe of about 200 blacks frequented the Vale. Both Mr. and Mrs. Hall would rather speak of good deeds performed by the blacks in preference to acts of treachery perpetrated by some of the wild savages.

When Canning Downs station was subdivided and sold Mr. Hall acquired a property at Loch Lomond where the family resided for a number of years. Eventually Mr. and Mrs. Hall decided to live in retirement and purchased Leslie Villa," East Warwick, where they spent he evening of their lives. It was during this period that Mr. Hall was persuaded to write his memoirs of the Darling Downs and have them published in book form. The late Mr. Hall was an outstanding authority on early Downs history, and his book, "The Early History of Warwick District, and Pioneers of the Darling Downs," is now regarded as one of the most authentic records of early Downs history. In this work he had a worthy helpmate in Mrs. Hall, who was also a pioneer of the 'fifties.

The late Mrs. Halt was a staunch member of the Presbyterian Church. She regularly attended service at Warwick from early girlhood days, and was a Christian woman who worshipped God, loved her Church, and found happiness and pleasure in the good that she could do for others. The Presbyterian Women's Guild, of which she was a member, also benefited by her assistance. Mrs. Hall nobly played her part in a wide sphere of activities in which her genial personality, kind advlce and comforting words helped to brighten the lives of a wide circle of friends who enjoyed the pleasure of her acquaintance. Regardless of where she resided her home was noted for hospitality. These are but a few of the many splendid qualities possessed by deceased, which gained for her the high esteem and respect of the community,

The late Mrs. Hall is survived by three sons—Tom Hall, Emu Vale; William Hall, New South Wales; A. Hall, Loch Lomond; and seven daughters— Mrs. S. J. Armstrong, Wiyarra; Mrs. C. Huxley, East Warwick; Mrs. J. Roberts, Maryvale; Mrs. Kruck, Conondale; Mrs. E. Tilney, Conondale; Mrs. O. Tilney, Conondale; and Mrs. D. Thorpe, East Warwick. There are 27 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Mrs. G. Alexander, Brisbane, Is an only surviving sister. She was predeceased by her husband 11 years ago, and her daughter, Mrs. F. G. Armstrong, about two years ago.

The funeral, which moved from her late residence to the Warwick cemetery, was largely attended by residents of Warwick and surrounding districts. The burial service was conducted by the Rev. G. Reid assisted by the Rev. J. Innes, Yangan.

Thus ended the earthly life of Mrs. Jane Hall, who nobly played her part in the pioneering development of the Darling Downs.

[[29798]] TULLOCH, Alexander, parents William TULLOCH and Isabella CHISHOLM
The death took place at his son's residence, Mill Hill, Warwick, early yesterday morning of Mr, Alexander Tulloch, at an advanced age. The deceased was one of the pioneer settlers in the Warwick district. His home was at Swan Creek, where he was one of the first of the Downs farmers to plant and harvest wheat. Fifty-two years have passed since the first show was held in Warwick by the Eastern Downs Association, and Mr. Tulloch was a foundation member of the Show Society, and when the jubilee of that organisation was celebrated two years ago, he was one of the four surviving members of the first committee. For the first 35 years of the Show Society's activities the deceased was a steward in the same section at every recurring show. In addition to being a skilled wheat grower, Mr. Tulloch was also a great authority on sheep and cattle, and the Tulloch family and its many relatives by blood and marriage may be said to have exercised a most beneficial influence on the whole trend of agricultural development in the South Downs in the early days of pioneering. The deceased possessed a store of interesting information regarding the first attempts at settlement, and also regarding the personality and life story of each of the Warwick district pioneers who helped to make the Southern Downs what it is to-day. The late Mr. Tulloch was a foundation member of the Warwick Caledonian Society, and up to his death he capably filled the office of deputy chief, and had never missed attending the annual Boxing Day reunions, in the organisation of which he took the keenest interest. He had been ill for some time and his death was not unexpected.

MR. ALEXANDER TULLOCH.

The death of Mr. Alexander Tulloch, which took place at the residence of his son at Mill Hill, where he had been lying for some time past in a precarious state, was not unexpected when it was announced in the columns of the "Daily News," early yesterday morning. At the same time it caused a considerable sensation, inasmuch as the late Mr. Tulloch was one of the first pioneers of this end of the Darling Downs. The Tulloch family, who were Scottish born, arrived in Queensland in 1862. The father was Mr. William Tulloch, and the mother a former Miss Chisholm, both of them being now related, on both sides; to many well known families at this end of the Darling Downs. The Tulloch family remained in Brisbane for about two years, and then came to the Darling Downs. The father, however, died in Brisbane. At first they pioneered on property owned by George and Charles Clark, at a spot then known as The Hermitage, but now known as Glencairn. Members of the family branched out with success generally, but the late Mr. Alex. Tulloch stuck to farming pursuits at Glencairn. In this also he was fortunate. There his home was a well-known rendezvous for friends from all parts. The carrying business, engaged Mr. Alex. Tulloch's attention in the early days, and often he took wool from Pikedale to Ipswich, and, of course, brought back loading to the Downs. The advent of the railways caused Mr. Tulloch to give up the business of carrying, and accordingly he occupied a portion of his father's property, and settled down after marrying Miss Louisa Chisholm. A few years later, however, there having been a financial depression in the State, the late Mr. William Allan offered Mr. Tulloch a position to take charge of, and clear, a sugar plantation in the Mourilyan district. When this had been completed Mr. Tulloeh returned to the Darling Downs. The deceased was one of the earliest to engage in wheat culture, and he was the first to show wheat at a Warwick Show and take prizes. Not only was he a very successful exhibitor in those days in Darling Downs Exhibitions, but he also won awards for prize wheat abroad. Mr. Alex. Tulloch was a foundation member of the E. D. H. and A. Association, and it is stated that the first meeting of the association was held at his father's home at Swan Creek. He was a foundation member of the Warwick Caledonian Society, of which he was Deputy Chief at the time of his death. It may be mentioned, further, that he, with the late, Mr. John Spreadborough, invariably controlled the vegetable section at the show for about half-a-century. Mr. Tulloch, in the early days, was a fine, all-round athlete at Scottish gatherings, and he excelled in Highland dances. He was born in the Scottish shire of Inverness, and it is interesting to note that the late squire of Blinkbonnie, Freestone, Mr. McIntosh, and also the father of Mr. Alex. Tulloch, were acquainted with each other in Inverness. The deceased was deeply interested in Freemasonry, and the members of the local lodges keenly regret his passing. The family of deceased is as follows:— William, who is at Glencairn, engaged in farming; Alexander, who is at Swan Creek, and occupied in farming; Hugh, who is at the Warwick Butter and Dairying Co.'s store at Mill Hill; and John, who is still engaged on active service. There are two daughters—Miss Annie Tulloch and Miss Isabel Tulloch, both of whom are living at home. There are three grandchildren. Relatives are: Mrs. William Wilson, Mount Sturt; Mrs. William Hall, Brisbane; Mrs. Thomas Hall, Warwick; and Mrs. G. Alexander, Massie. The funeral is announced to take place from the residence of Mr. Hugh Tulloch, at Mill Hill, at 11.30 a.m. to-day for the Warwick cemetery. Members of St. George's Lodge, 1372, E.C., are requested to meet at the Masonic Hall at 11 a.m. for the purpose of attending the funeral.

IT is with great regret that we have this week to announce the death of another old colonist—Mr. Thomas Hall, of West Hall. The melancholy event, which took place at the residence of his son in Dragon-street about midday yesterday, was not unexpected, as the deceased had been seriously unwell for some time back. Mr. Hall was a native of Aberdeenshire, Scotland, from which place he emigrated about twenty-six years ago, and resided with his family in this neighborhood ever since. He was an honest, upright man, much respected and esteemed by a large circle of friends and acquaintances. Deceased was in the 63rd year of his age at the time of his death, and the funeral will take place at 11 a.m. to-day.
