MRS. JAMES CHAPPLE. On Satutday last (says yesterday's "Courier") there passed away another of the old identities of Queensland - Mrs. James Chapple, wife of a well-known Gympie resident. Mrs. Chapple was born at Gatton 66 years ago, her parents being Mr. and Mrs. John Burgess, residents of the Ipswich district for years. The family subsequently removed to Ipswich, where Miss Burgess became engaged to Mr. "Jim" Chapple, and subsequently married him. When the Gympie rush "broke out" Mr. and Mrs. Chapple, with their young daughter (now Mrs. G. S. Flay, Junction Hotel, Ipswich-road), went to the gold-field, where her husband subsequently acquired an interest in "The Gympie Times." then published as "The Nashville Times." Mr. Chapple became one of the most prominent of the citizens of the gold-field, and Mrs. Chapple shared in the activities of her husband. About seven years ago Mrs. Chapple came to Brisbane, and resided with one of her daughters up to the time a of her death. Some eight months ago, Mrs. Chapple had a serious illness, but apparently recovered, and was quite well up to last week. The funeral, which took place on Sunday afternoon, was largely attended by relatives and many old friends. Some two years ago the "Courier" published a photograph of "Four Generations of Queensland Born," these comprising Mrs. Chapple, her daughter (Mrs. Flay), grand-daughter (Mrs. Whiting), and little Leonie Whiting. (Old residents of Ipswich will remember that the Burgess Family lived in Martin-street. Mr. James Chapple (deceased's husband) was at one time a very expert compositor on the mechan- ical staff of this journal.-Ed. " Q.T.")

The numerous friends and acquaintances of Mr. James Chapple will regret to learn of his death, which occurred at midnight on Tuesday, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. John Muir, Ipswich-road.
The deceased gentleman had been laid aside for some 18 months prior to his death. He was well known in sporting circles, having been a racehorse owner, among his horses being Phoenix, a winner of the Brisbane Cup. He was a very old identity of Queensland, and was in Gympie in the early days, he and Messrs. Herbert Rogers and Kidner leaving the " Queensland Times " and founding the "Nashville Times," which subsequently became the "Gympie Times." Mr. Chapple remained in Gympie during its palmiest days, and took a prominent part in public life, being a member of the Municipal Council, the Agricultural Society, Turf Club, and School of Arts. He also contested the Gympie seat for Parliamentary honours, but did not meet with success, though on one occasion he was defeated by only a narrow margin. About 12 years ago he came to Brisbane.
His wife predeceased him about 12 months ago, but his family of four daughters and one son survive him. The funeral will move to the South Brisbane Cemetery at 10 o'clock this morning.
