WHAT appears to have been a diabolical attempt to set fire to a dwelling-house was made by some person in Perry-street, near Petrie's Bight, late on Monday night. In Perry-street are situated three houses adjoining each other, forming a terrace, belonging to Mr. Barltrop, the owner of the Excelsior Baths, and yesterday morning he was informed by one of his tenants of an attempt made to destroy his dwelling-house by fire. A quantity of kerosine and some other inflammable substances had been placed on the veranda against the wall and ignited, but the fire attracted the attention of the tenant already referred to, who at once extinguished it before any damage was done. The matter is being investigated by the detective department.

FUNERAL NOTICE.— The Friends of Messrs. D. J. STEWART and W. H. BARLTROP are respectfully invited to attend the FUNERAL of their deceased Father-in-law (Mr. Charles Hedgelong), to move from the residence of Mr. D. J. Stewart, Kensington, Kedron Park, THIS (Wednesday) AFTERNOON, at 4 o'clock, to the Lutwyche Cemetery.

Family Notices (1906, March 7). The Telegraph (Brisbane, Qld. : 1872 - 1947), p. 6. Link to TROVE

Death of Octogenarian.
Late Mr. Charles Hedgelong.

There passed away at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. D. S. Stewart, Kensington, Kedron Park, on 6th March, Mr. Charles Hedgelong, who for 43 years was a resident of Brisbane, and had attained the ripe old age of 84 years. He was born on 19th July, 1821, at Weybridge, in Surrey, England, and was educated at the celebrated school of St. Mary, which stand's in three parishes (France, Tunbridge, and Spendhurst), and afterwards at Westminster College. He was one of the famous choir boys of the old church, and later in lite, was renowned for his clear tenor voice. He was for five years teacher at the famous Blue Coat school, and met in Brisbane many of his former scholars. Resigning his position in the Blue Coat school, he went back to Westminster College. His education was provided for by the late Duke of Wellington, and many a story he has related of the iron duke and the late empress queen, who when a girl frequently visited Walmer Castle. The late Mr. Charles Hedgelong spent his boyhood's days at the castle, his father being an old servant of the iron duke's. When the deceased was at Westminster College, the duke was the means of procuring him the position of headmaster of the Walmer school, and one Sophy Phillips was appointed by the duke as headmistress. The lady afterwards became Mrs. Charles Hedgelong, and the issue of this marriage was one son and two daughters. About the time the youngest child was two years old, the late Mr. Henry Jordan was lecturing in England on behalf of Queensland, and he left a lot of books and papers with Mr. Hedgelong, the upshot being that he decided to come out to Queensland. The Bishop of London gave him letters of introduction to the Hon. R. G. W. Herbert, who at that time was the Premier of Queensland, Leaving good old England in the ship Saldana, he took passages for himself, wife, and three children, paying the sum of £130 for their fares. The voyage was full of excitement. Much to the disgust of the passengers, when the ship arrived at Moreton Bay, the yellow flag was hoisted, but the captain was not to be beaten. He pulled it down, sent the pilot back, and sailed on to Rockhampton, and returning eventually, reached South Brisbane after some weeks delay. The result of the letters to Mr. Herbert was that Mr. Hedgelong was appointed to the Church of England school in Brisbane, the headmastership of which he retained for 14 years. Sir S. W. Griffith's Education Act was the means of doing away with the non-vested schools, and Mr. Hedgelong was placed in charge of the Eagle Farm State school, and later on the South Pine school, putting in altogether 29 years of active leaching. He only resigned some 14 years ago, in consequence of approaching deafness. His daughter was married to Mr. David Stewart, with whom he resided tor some time prior to the close of his long and useful career.

Death of Octogenarian. (1906, March 14). The Telegraph (Brisbane, Qld. : 1872 - 1947), p. 3. Link to TROVE

By the death of Mr Charles Hedgelong, which took place on 6th March at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. D. J. Stewart, Kensington, Kedron Park, another of the pioneers of Queensland has passed away. Born at Weybridge, Surrey, England, in July, 1821, Mr. Hedgelong was educated at St. Mary's School, Tunbridge Wells, and at Westminster College. For many years he was a teacher in the Blue Coat School. His education was provided for by the late Duke of Wellington. Much of his boyhood was spent at Walmer Castle, where his father was in the Duke's service. Through the influence of the Duke of Wellington, he was appointed head master of the Walmer School where Miss Sophy Phillips (afterwards Mrs. Hedgelong) occupied the position of head mistress. One son and two daughters were the issue of this marriage.

About the time the youngest daughter was two years old, the late Mr. Henry Jordan was lecturing on Queensland, to which country Mr. Hedgelong decided to come. From the Bishop of Walmer he received letters of introduction to his son-in-law, the Hon. R. Herbert, then Prime Minister of this State. Mr. Hedgelong arrived here in 1863, in the ship Saldana and as a result of the letters he brought with him, was almost immediately placed in charge of the South Brisbane English School, which position he occupied for fourteen years. On the introduction of Sir Charles Lilley's Education Act, State assistance to denominational schools was discontinued and he became head teacher at Eagle Farm School and later at South Pine School. For twenty-nine years he was connected with educational matters in Queensland. With the advance of years he suffered from deafness and in 1892 retired into private life. His wife predeceased him seven years ago. About eight years ago his son Fred was found dead on the Normanton-Croydon Road from sunstroke. His two daughters survive him. One is the wife of D. Stewart, bootmaker, George Street, and the other of Mr. W. H. Barltrop of Hamilton.

DEATH OF MR. DAVID WYETH.

The friends of Mr. David Wyeth will learn will regret of his death, which took place about seven o'clock yesterday evening, at the residence of his son, Mr. Amos Wyeth. The deceased gentleman had attained the age of eighty-two years, and for sometime had been in failing health so that his death was not altogether unexpected. He was one of our oldest colonists having come to Queensland in 1863, and with the exception of a few months residence in Gympie he lived for the whole time in Toowoomba, following the occupation of a contractor whilst able to work. He leaves two sons Messrs. Caleb and Amos Wyeth, both of this town, and one daughter, Mrs. Dean of Allora. Mr. Wyeth was of a very genial disposition and made many friends in the old days, though to the younger generation he was hardly known as he lived a very retired life. As announced elsewhere his funeral will take place this afternoon at half-past three o'clock to the Toowoomba Cemetery.

DEATH OF A VERY OLD RESIDENT.

We regret to record the death of Mrs David Wyeth, at the advanced age of 81 years. The deceased lady and her husband arrived in Queensland in 1863 by the ship Warren Hastings, and immediately came, to the Downs and settled in Toowoomba, where she remained until the time of her death. During her thirty-seven years' residence among us the deceased lady made many warm friends through the display of the best womanly qualities, and these she retained while life lasted, for up to the time of her death her friends were assiduous in their attendance upon her when her failing physical strength prevented her going out and in among ? as of yore. About fifteen months ago Mrs Wyeth received a slight stroke of paralysis, which was a premonition of the breaking up of a hitherto robust constitution. She gradually declined in strength, and calmly passed away early yesterday morning, surrounded by her nearest relations and deeply mourned by many friends, who had grown to love the old lady. She leaves behind her an aged husband, two sons, Messrs Caleb and Amos Wyeth, well-known and respected citizens of this town, and one daughter, married to Mr Drave of Allora, manager for Messrs G. P. Barnes and Co., also twenty grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She was predeceased by one son, who died just when entering upon the ages of manhood. The funeral will take place this morning at ten o'clock, the burial service being conducted by the Rev. T. Warham, of the Wesleyan Church, with which she and her family were connected, and of which they have proved themselves valued members for very many years.

Inspector Quinn was advised by the Gladstone police on Tuesday that George Last, aged eighty-one years, was found dead in his bed at Gladstone at a quarter to seven o'clock yesterday morning with a bullet wound in his head and a revolver clasped in his hand. He had apparently placed the muzzle of the revolver in his mouth and fired. The bullet lodged in the brain. Death must have been instantaneous. The deceased resided with his son, Robert Last.
