We regret to record the occurrence of a fatal accident on the Yeppoon Road, near the residence of Mr. A. Gunn, yesterday forenoon. A party of four, comprising George Clark and his son William, Harry Jarrett, and Alfred Batch engaged a buggy and two horses from Messrs. Rutherford, East-street, for the purpose of driving to Mr. W. L. Bell's farm, about ten miles out on the Yeppoon Road. Jarrett was driving when the vehicle came to the descent just before reaching Mr. A. Gunn's dairy farm, bout six miles from town. The road is steep and rough, and in going down hill the horses bolted. Mr. Jarrett, who was driving, banded one of the reins to Mr. Clark in the hope that, with his aid, he would be able to pull the animals up. Mr. Clark, being a stronger man than Mr. Jarrett, pulled the horses to one side and then ran the buggy against the fence, throwing Mr. Jarrett, Mr. Clark, and his son against the rails. Mr. Batch, who occupied the back seat, stuck to the buggy, which was dragged about fifty yards further along the road, and then brought forcibly in contact with a tree. Mr. Batch was thrown out and killed on the spot, for when his companions went to his assistance they found him dead. Evidently his neck was broken. Soon after the horses collided with another tree, broke the pole of the buggy, snapped the harness and got away. They were after- wards secured, and with the buggy, left at Mr. Gunn's place. Information was conveyed to the police, and Constables Blair and Donohue went out and brought the body into town. Mr. Batch was a jeweller by trade and was in the employ of Mr. R. H. Bate, East-street. He was a respectable young man, about thirty years old, and was an active member of our sailing club. His parents live in Brisbane. Mr. Clark received a few cuts and bruises. His son did not escape so easily. A splinter of wood off the fence, measuring about 1/2 in. in thickness and fully 4 in. or 5 in. in length, ran right into his flesh. Mr. Garrett had a severe bruising on the left side and several cuts about the head.
