AT AGE 87
Mr. Thomas Beckett, one of Queensland's pioneers, who was born at Reading, Berkshire, England, on the day of the first Exhibition of London, in 1851, died at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. S. Beedell, Newcastle Street, Fairfield, yesterday evening.
Mr. Beckett arrived by a sailing ship in Moreton Bay over 80 years ago, and took up residence with his father and two sisters at Ipswich. He later moved to the Dalby district, where he worked as a boy on Jimbour Station, for Sir Joshua Peter Bell. He was a well known horseman, and was chased by bushrangers on a number of occasions when riding the mails between Jimbour and Warwick. He was later employed by his brother-in-law, the late Mr. William Hall, of Dalby, where be was taught the trade of blacksmithing. He married Phoebe Short at Jimbour about 66 years ago, and reared a family of 11.
After being in business in St. George, Surat, Yeulba, and Roma, he came to Brisbane in 1902 and started business as a blacksmith on Annerley Road and Ipswich Road, South Brisbane, which he continued until the date of his retirement about 20 years ago.
He is survived by one sister, Mrs. William Hall, of Dalby, who is now in her 94th year, and four daughters, Mrs. S. Beedell, Mrs. A. Althouse, Mrs. A. Lewis, Mrs. A. Graham and five sons, Thomas, Charles, William J., Norman and Leslie, and also 30 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
