MR. CHARLES ARNOLD.
It is with regret that we have to announce the death of an old and highly respected resident of Roma, Mr. Charles Arnold, who passed away about midday yesterday at the advanced age of 76 years. From particulars available yesterday afternoon it is learned that Mr. Arnold came to Roma upwards of 50 years ago. A saddler by trade, he followed his calling in Roma, with the intermission of a few years, from the time of his arrival, and for a time also was actively interested in farming pursuits. Up to a few years ago, when failing health compelled him to take a less active interest in local affairs, Mr. Arnold was an energetic citizen. For many years he was an active member of the Roma Show committee, and as an exhibitor of poultry and horses at the show was frequently successful. He always had a great fancy for a good trotting pony, behind one of which he could daily be seen going to and from his place of business, and he also has bred some good Jersey cows. In his younger days he was an enthusiastic cricketer, and when political battles were on, there was no more indefatigable worker than "Charlie" Arnold. About 39 years ago he left Roma and went to Brisbane, but after a few years in business there as an estate agent, he returned and again resumed his business as saddler in the town of his early adoption, a business which he, with the of his sons, carried on to the time of his death.
The late Mr. Arnold was a thorough ''straight-goer,'' and was highly esteemed by all who knew him. Though he has been about as usual until recently, he has been in failing health for some considerable time. He married a daughter of Mr. John Slaughter, a former resident of Roma, his wife predeceasing him about two years. He leaves a grown-up family of four sons and two daughters. The funeral will move from the residence in May street this (Wednesday) morning at 11 a.m.
