His father was a photographer who was born circa 1827 in Cupar, Scotland and died there Sunday, 27 March 1904. His mother, Agnes, was born about 1829 in Cupar.

WEDDING BELLS.
Ross-Toy.
The wedding of Mr. E. M. Ross, late of the 50th Battalion, A.I.F. (second youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Ross, Herberton) to Miss B. M. Toy (second eldest daughter of the late Mr. J. Toy, Watsonville) took place at the residence of Mrs. Clem Ross, Watsonville, on Saturday. 29th May, the Rev. Prouse, of Herberton, officiating. The bride was dressed in white georgette over white crepe de chine, neatly designed. The wedding cake was a very fine specimen of workmanship, being made by the bridegroom's sisters. Mesdames H. and R. Wilesmith, Watsonville. Quite a large number of useful presents, including a number of cheques, were given, with best wishes for the future happiness and prosperity of the young couple in their new sphere of life. At night, the School of Arts being engaged, the party enjoyed a few hours dancing, and afterwards at the residence of Mrs. Clem Ross, close on 50 persons sat down to supper.
