CRASHED INTO COW
Motor Cyclist's Death
Evidence that the rider of a motor cycle crashed into a cow near Salisbury Bridge on June 17, and received injuries from which he died, was given at an inquest held by Mr. M. J. Hickey, Deputy City Coroner, yesterday, on the death of Thomas George Huggins (27), of Lawrence Street, Sunnybank. Deceased's widow, Minnie Elizabeth Huggins, said that her husband had been employed by Wunderlich in the Valley and he used to ride a motor cycle to his work. He left for work as usual on June 17, and that night she was informed that her husband had met with an accident near Salisbury Bridge. She went to the Brisbane General Hospital and remained with him until he died at about 12.30 a.m. Constable Sidney Walter Lange, stationed at Moorooka, said that when he went to the scene of the accident he saw a dead cow near the side of the road, almost opposite the commencement of the approach to the bridge. Later that night he interviewed a man who said he had driven six head of cattle from Glen Eagle to Salisbury. He told the witness that at the spot where the accident occurred he tried to get all the cows to pass over the bridge on the bitumen roadway. He saw the motor cycle approaching at about 30 miles an hour, and cracked his whip and shouted to draw the cyclist's attention to the cattle on the road in front of him, but the rider did not seem to see or hear him or the cattle, and continued on at the same rate and crashed into a cow, which was injured and died a few minutes later. The ambulance attended the rider of the motor cycle and took him away. Witness said there was no street light at the scene of the accident. He was convinced the occurrence was accidental. The inquest was adjourned to Beaudesert.
