LATE Mr. JOHN CROUCH MANN.

The late Mr. John Crouch Mann, whose death was briefly reported, was an old resident of the district, and was born at Roma in 1868, and educated at the Roma State School.
Later he went to Mitchell with his parents, and was apprenticed to the plumbing trade with his brother-in-law, Mr. Alexander Albian. After some years he proceeded further west to Charleville, where he was employed as a butcher for the late Mr. John Armstrong. He remained in Mr. Armstrong's employ tor nineteen years, and only left the West because of medical advice on account of sandy blight affecting the eyes of his children. Whilst in Charleville he was instrumental in the founding of the Royal Hope of Charleville Lodge, a branch of the M.U.I.O.O.F., and for years was treasurer. In sport he was a keen cricketer, and was regarded as the best all-round cricketer in the Charleville Club.
At the age of 23 he married Miss Eliza McConachy. Early in his married life he had the misfortune to have his home and its contents completely destroyed by fire.
Some thirty-six years ago the late Mr. Mann and his wife, and their two sons—John Charles and Victor Crouch —and one daughter—Phyllis May (Mrs. Mervyn Hanlon) — came to this district and engaged in farming at Yarranlea. His wife died in Toowoomba a few years after going to Yarranlea. During the Great War his eldest son, John Charles, enlisted for active service, and was killed in France in 1917. His third son, Nelson James, was born at Yarranlea.
Mr. Mann again married, his second wife being Mrs. Sparrow, and there were four children from the marriage, namely, Bramwell Arthur, Beryl Thelma, Clarice Jean and John Charles.
Mr. Mann interested himself in public affairs, and was chairman of the Yarranlea School Committee until this year, when he retired after 34 years’ service as a committeeman and chairman. In his time he was chairman of the Farmers’ Union and branchaes of the Australian Labour Party.
He was a delegate on several wheat-growers' conferences which interviewed the Government of the day, before the State Wheat Board came into existence. He was also a member of the directorate of the Pittsworth Co-operative Dairy Association Ltd., the Protestant Alliance Lodge, and the Pittsworth Masonic Lodge.
He was president of the Ayrshire Cattle Herd Book Society, and represented the branch at their Federal Council meetings held in Melbourne. He established one of the best Ayrshire studs in Australia, and sent cattle to three States in the Commonwealth.
Mr. Mann will always have a monument in the form of twin silos he had built on his farm over twenty years ago—the first in the district, and can be credited with being the first to make a real effort to make ensilage in any way, and with any measure of success.
Mr. Mann died suddenly at his home, and although more or less of a cripple for some time, his health did not indicate that his end was near.
The funeral took place at Pittsworth, and was largely attended. Being a member of the Salvation Army for over fifty years, a short service was held at the Salvation Army Hall, where Captain Rogers officiated, and also at the graveside.
Those left to mourn their loss are Mr. and Mrs. Mervyn Hanlon, Mr. and Mrs. V. Mann, Mr. and Mrs. Doug Ole, Mr. and Mrs. R. Trott, Mr. and Mrs. Bram. Mann, Messrs. Nelson and Jack Mann, and nine grandchildren.
