Mr. Richard Gannon, Cedar Creek, near Beenleigh, expired, at the age of 85 years, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Bishop, on the 6th ultimo. The late Mr. Gannon was one of the fine old band of Australian pioneers.
He was born in Spain in the year 1820, of Irish parentage, and when only six weeks of age his parents returned to their native heath-Middleton, County Cork. In the year 1840 he arrived in Sydney in the immigrant ship Lady Clarke, and shortly after he was engaged on the " Bathurst Free Press," by the then proprietor, Mr. Tress, for the purpose of writing letters in the interests of the squatters for the "Sydney Morning Herald"; but, owing to his unfavourable criticisms, he did not long retain his position. He then took up station life on Wonbobi station.
The year 1842, the Moreton Bay district being open to free settlement, found him in Brisbane. After trying several businesses, and finding them unremunerative, he, in conjunction with a mate named Frank Hatherington, started a cordial factory in the workshops which hid been erected and used by the convicts (having obtained permission from the then Commissioner, the late Dr. Simpson). The site of these workshops is that at present occupied by T. and W. Gray, in George-street, near the Queen street corner. This site was given up upon Brisbane being surveyed into allotments. Mr. Gannon subsequently went into the hotelkeeping line in Russell-street, South Brisbane ; but this did not suit his tastes.
In 1849 he married, and shifted up to Moggill, where he was timber getting for the next ten years. In the year 1859 he moved up to the Logan district, taking up a selection at Cedar Creek, where he lived until the time of his death. His wife predeceased him about twenty years, as did three of his children, but six others are left-two sons and four daughters-all of whom are married.
The funeral was largely attended.
