Of her six children, Herbert James was the only child whose birth wasn`t registered under HAIR. All of the other children were registered under both MASSEY and HAIR and it is presumed that Mary and James did not marry as an index entry has not been located. The first of Mary`s children was born in 1880, which is when the last of the notices about James` first wife, Emily (nee GUNN), appeared in the newspapers.

the blow severe,
We little thought the end was near,
Only those who have lost are able to tell
The pain that is left at not saying farewell.
