Quite a gloom was cast over the people at and near the Logan Village when it became known on Monday afternoon last that George Featherstone was drowned in the river just above the Logan Village. It appears from the evidence taken by Mr. J. H. Hinchcliffe, J.P., who held the inquest on Tuesday last, that George Featherstone had been in Brisbane the week before on some important business transactions, and that as usual lately he had been drinking heavily. He, however, returned to the residence of his wife on Saturday, at Quinseh Creek. He was very bad on Sunday with more grog, and he had some planted near the house which he frequently attended to. On Monday he arranged with his wife to go to his own farm about three miles further up the river, and she was to meet him there on the Tuesday morning. When proceeding up the river in a boat or punt he was seen by a witness, Peter Hunter, a stranger to the district, who did not know Featherstone personally, but whose attention was directed to the noise in the river when he was working on the banks. Hunter first saw a person in the river holding on with both hands to the punt or boat. He made several attempts to get into the punt and to get his leg over the side, but he failed. After an extra effort to try to get into the punt the witness saw him sink and the punt drift away. The witness did not call out to Featherstone, or Featherstone to him, as he did not know him. He went to the Village and reported the matter.
Mr. Matthew Hinchcliffe also gave evidence that when it was reported in the Village he went up to the scene of the accident, and there was also August Holzheimer, William Fairfax, Albert Lubach, John Evans, and Peter Hunter, there. Peter Hunter gave them word where to search, and they found the body at about half-past five. He knew the deceased to be George Featherstone, an old settler. They got the body on shore and had it taken to his wife's residence, when word was sent to Beenleigh to the police.
Mr. Hinchcliffe entered the cause of death as "Found Drowned,'" and made his reports to the Commissioner of Police and the Attorney-General accordingly.
The funeral of the deceased took place in the Logan VilIage Cemetery on Tuesday afternoon, and was attended by a large number of old friends and neighbors.
