DEATH OF MRS. S. J. BARTLEM
Another old and respected resident of this city, Mrs. Sarah Jane Bartlem, passed away at the General Hospital on Friday last at the age of 87 years. Mrs. Bartlem has been an inmate of that institution for 21 weeks as a result of failing from a couch and breaking her thigh. She was born in Nottingham, on the 14th. February, 1838. Subsequently with her husband they journeyed out to Australia in the sailing ship "Empress of the Seas," arriving here on the 28th September, 1865. She, has resided here ever since. During her long residence of 60 years she has seen the city grow from its primitive stage to its present extensive proportions.
Her husband predeceased her fourteen years ago. Since then she has resided with her daughter, Mrs. J. Donaghey. The deceased was a devoted member of the Archer Street Methodist Church, and was one of Its oldest members. She had a family of ten children of whom four survive her, Mrs. J. Jackson (Charters Towers), Mrs. A. Wakefield (Ipswich), Mrs. J. Donaghey and Mr H. Bartlem (Rockhampton). There are 46 grandchildren, 70 great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren, The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon at the Rockhampton Cemetery. The pallbearers consisted of five grandsons and one great grandson. The Revs. J. R. Williams and R. P. Pope officiated at the graveside service, the large gathering testifying to the high esteem in which the deceased lady was held.
