Drink and drowning have been associated from time immemorial. The old relations hold in Brisbane as elsewhere. A magisterial inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of Mrs. Agnes Cooper, who was found in the Brisbane River on October 10, was held at the South Brisbane Police Court, this morning (says the " Telegraph"), before Mr. W. Yaldwyn, P.M. Constable Behan deposed that, in consequence of a report made to him by Joseph Major, on October 10, he went to the South Brisbane railway wharf, where he saw the dead body of a woman. Witness conveyed the body to the morgue, where Dr. Wray made a post-mortem examination and gave a certificate of death by drowning (produced).
The body was subsequently identified as that of Agnes Cooper. Elizabeth Brown, barmaid at the Britannia Hotel, deposed that on October 8 the deceased went to the hotel and had a glass of beer. Witness asked her when she was going to stop drinking, to which she replied that if she was a trouble to witness she would not be so much longer.
John Cooper, labourer, residing at Allen-street, South Brisbane, deposed that the deceased Agnes Cooper was his wife. On October 8, when he returned from his work, he found the furniture of the house in disorder. He sent his boys to look for their mother, but they returned and said they could not find her. The following day he sent the boys to look for his wife again, but they were again unsuccesful.
The first time he heard that his wife was dead was on the evening of October 10, when he was notified by the police. The next morning he went to the morgue and saw her dead body. Deceased was 42 years of age, and was born in Renfrewshire, Scotland. There were seven children living, the eldest being 19 and the youngest three years of age.
