The Surat correspondent of the "Western Star" thus writes:-There passed away, at Sydenham, yesterday evening (June 3), Mr. John Nason, one of the oldest pioneers in Southern Queensland, and a man respected by all who knew him, at the ripe old age of 86 years. Deceased first came to Surat in 1857. Leaving for a time, he was married, at Drayton, in 1858. (His good wife predeceased him last year.) The same year Mr. Nason, accompanied by his wife, came to manage Blenheim, Surat, for the late Mr. Chas. Coxen. At this time you could count all the white people in this part on your fingers, and it wanted a man with the pluck and grit for which Mr. Nason was so well known to take on the West. When he came to Blenheim there were some 350 half-tamed natives camped within a mile of the place. Mr. Nason next turned his attention to Glenearn and Talavera, where he overseered for several years. Later on he took the management of Murilla, when it was known as a large cattle station, and owned by that good man, the late Mr. John Daisey, of Ipswich. After spending some years at Murilla Mr. Nason left, and lived in Brisbane for a couple of years. Returning to Surat, he was appointed clerk to the Warroo Shire Council, which position he held for 11 years. Latterly Mr. Nason lived a quiet life, with his daughter, Mrs. Bager, of Sydenham, at which place his sad end came yesterday afternoon. A family of seven--Mrs. Bager, Sydenham, Mr. Willie Nason (of J. P. Bottomley and Co.), Ipswich, Mrs Cowton, Ipswich, Mr. Alf. Nason, Newington, Surat, Mrs. John Neill, Frogmoor, Surat, Mr. Chas. Nason, Rockdale, Surat, and Mrs. Hunter, Indooroopilly (Brisbane) - is left to mourn their loss, and the sympathy of the community is extended to them in their bereavement.
