The "Gladstone Observer" announces the death of a very old Queensland resident in Mr. J. E. Coase, at the age of seventy-three years. Mr. Coase came to Brisbane from Devonshire in 1862; but it was not many years before he gravitated to Gladstone, when he finally settled and brought up a large family. He was a member of the Municipal Council for ten years, and twice Mayor. He was also connected with almost every public institution in Gladstone, and built some of its most important edifices, including the Church of England and the Australian Joint Stock Bank. Mr. Coase was a partner of Mr. J. T. W. Brown. The deceased has left a widow and six children, all of whom arc married and settled in or about Gladstone.

Mary and her husband John, arrived on City of Brisbane
Thursday, 26 June 1862
Mrs. Mary Coase, relict of the late John Emanuel Coase, passed away peacefully on Friday evening, in her seventy-ninth year, says the "Gladstone Observer" of Wednesday last. The deceased had been ailing for some time, and when life flickered quietly out the event was not unexpected. She was born in Devonshire, England, in 1831, was married in 1854, and eight years, later migrated to Queensland with her husband in the ship City of Brisbane. The first experience of bush life was gained at Gin Gin and some roughing was done in the five years they resided in that district, which enabled them to start out for themselves. They were attracted to Port Curtis by the stream of pastoralists who were, then opening up the northern district, and Gladstone was made their home. The old lady never left the town after coming here to reside, nor had she any desire to do so, being one of those happy, contented natures that always find something sweet in life, wherever their lot may be cast. The funeral on Saturday was largely attended, and included a number of members of the Loyal Gladstone Lodge, of which branch her late husband was a foundation member. The deceased's children and grandchildren numbered thirty-nine, eleven of whom are dead. There are ten great grandchildren.
