A very old and respected resident in the person of Mr. John Torkington passed away on Thursday last at the age of 83 (says the 'Northern Miner'). The deceased spent his early days in St. Lawrence, Broad Sound, where he had a large black-smith and wheelwright business, selling out later to Fox and Adair. He then journeyed to Nebo, again entering the same line of business. Later he left for Ukalandla, where he devoted his time to mining, discovering the bismuth mine which he afterwards sold to Dr. Flateau. Charters Towers was his next move and he has been here many years, following up tin mining. He discovered Lucky Hill, Sandy Creek, which is now one of the best tin mines about here. He leaves a wife and grown up family.

TORKINGTON. In loving memory of our dear mother, Mary Jane Tor- kington, who died 20th August, 1912.
" Gone but not forgotten,"
Rest, dearest mother, thy toll is o'er,
Thy loving hands shall toil no more.
No more thy gentle eyes shall weep.
Rest, darling mother, Gently sleep.
Thou art not forgotten, dearest mother
Or wilt thou over be
As long as life and memory last
We will remember thee.

DIES FROM HEAT AND EXHAUSTION.
BODY FOUND IN BUSH.
TOWNSVILLE, Nov. 24.— The body of Herbert Torkington, about 68, single, an old-age pensioner, was found by the police this morning in a gully in the bush, a mile from his hut, in Lavery's paddock, about six miles from Charters Towers.
Torkington lived alone, and at times made prospecting expeditions into the bush, and had become lost on a previous occasion.
A lad was in the habit of keeping an eye on the old man, and, finding him absent from his hut on Thursday night, sent a message to the police. His tracks were followed this morning, and they led to his dead body. Death apparently had been caused by heat and exhaustion.

A very impressive service was conducted in the local Methodist Church, on Sunday last, in connection with the late Mrs. Isaac Denning. A large congregation assembled to show their respect for the departed lady, and also for the bereaved family. Among those present were numerous relatives of the deceased who were accommodated with reserved seats in the front part of the church. The Rev. A. G. Smith conducted the service. Selecting for his text 2nd Corinthians, v., 4-17-18, the rev. gentleman preached a touching sermon, which had a visible effect upon the congregation. Miss G. Michel, of Lowood, ably presided at the organ, and Mr. H. Shelton sang, with much feeling, a solo entitled, "We'll meet each other there." At the close of the service the whole congregation stood while the organist played the, "Dead March."
