A FATAL EXPLOSION.
On Tuesday morning, a miner named John Sherrin, 25 years of age, sustained fatal injuries as the result, of an accidental explosion. He was camping somewhere near the Swanbank coal mine, and decided to sleep in an old building, formerly used as a powder magazine. This place he was cleaning out on Tuesday morning, and, evidently being unaware that there were any explosives remaining in the structure, was smoking his pipe. There must, however, have been powder about, for an explosion occured, knocking him down and igniting his clothes. These were practically burnt off him before a couple of the Swanbank miners arrived on the scene and smothered the flames. They afterwards brought the sufferer to the Ipswich Hospital, where he arrived in a very low condition. An examination showed that he was very severely burnt from the back of his neck to his heels, while his arms and hands were also blurnt. Everything possible was done in the case, but no hope was entertained of his recovery, and he expired the same night. The deceased, who was a single man, had no relatives here, and came from Brisbane.

Obituary
MISS E. SMALLWOOD
LOWOOD, Oct. 8.-The death occured at the Ipswich Hospital on Monday afternoon of Miss Eliza Dorothy Smallwood at the age of 81 years.
The late Miss Smallwood was born in Wickham, Sussex, England, on June 11, 1872. She came to Australia with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. James Smallwood, on the sailing ship Ramsey, and they were some months on board the vessel before they reached Australia. She was 18 months old when they arried. They came out with a family named Johnston (of Ipswich) and came on to Wilkinsons who had settled at Glamorgan Vale. There the family took up scrub land, and had a busy time building a shack and clearing scrub. They lived on the old family home for 54 years and then came to Lowood 24 years ago.
During Miss Smallwoods early days, she took an active interest in the work of the Glamorgan Vale Methodist Church and Sunday School. She also did Red Cross work during the 1914-18 war.
She was of a retiring nature and of late years was not able to leave her home because of age disabilities. Her funeral left the Fernvale Methodist Church on Wednesday morning for the Fernvale Cemetery. Rev. 0. J. Gunders conducted the ceremony at the church and graveside. Mrs. Phelps was organist at the church. She leaves one sister, Mrs. E. C. Nunn. sen., (Lowood), and two brothers, Messrs G. H. Smallwood (Fernvale), and J. C. Smallwood (Booval).
