DIAMOND WEDDING
MR. AND MRS. W. CLELAND.
GORDONVALE, Sept. 10. -On August 30, 1937, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Cleland, of Gordonvale, celebrated their Golden Wedding. On that occasion all eight members, of their family were reunited, the first time for 20 years. All pledged themselves to return in ten years' time for their
parents' Diamond Wedding. That happy event, took place on Saturday, August 30, 1947, and all members of the family again assembled at their parents' home in Swan-street, to join in festivities worthy of such a great day.
The celebration was in the form of a dinner. This was served at T-shaped tables set in the spacious lounge. The tables were tastefully decorated with vases of gerberas and golden orchids, and float bowls of phlox. Tall baskets of gladioli and meadow-sweet adorned the room. Pride of
place was given to a diamond-shaped wedding-cake, made and presented by Mrs. Cleland's nephew, Mr. Edgar Wilesmith, Cairns. Little diamond mirrors specially engraved for the occasion gave a novel and artistic effect, while sequins sparkled like the diamonds which they
represented.
At 6.30 p.m. the happy couple took their places at the head of the table and all others took places specially assigned to them. Mrs. Cleland looked smart in a frock of navy flat crepe, beautifully beaded, and she wore a shoulder-spray of daffodils and butterfly delphiniums sent by air from her grandchildren, Dulcie and Malcolm Michael, of Brisbane.
Only close members of the family were present: Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Cleland (Chillagoe), Mr. R. G. Cleland (Brisbane), Messrs. W. Cleland and J. Cleland (Townsville), Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Cleland (Gordonvale), Mrs. Michael (Kingaroy), Mr. and Mrs. W. Sorenson (Gordonvale), Mr. and Mrs. T. Beck (Goondi), Mr. and Mrs. H. Wilesmith (Cairns), Mr. and Mrs. R. Wilesmith (Cairns), Mr. and.
Mrs. A. A. Cleland (Goondi), and six granchildren.
Mr. A. W. Cleland, eldest son, was chairman, and after dinner was served, and, the loyal toast honoured, he proposed the toast of the guests "Mum and Dad." In a brief speech he recalled the days of childhood, the devotion and care which his parents had bestowed upon their children. He hoped they would live to enjoy many more years of health and happiness together. The toast was drunk with musical honours. All other members of the family supporting the chairman, Joined in the eulogy of their parents. As all old pioneers ot the north, Mr. and Mrs. Cleland had had their share of trouble and hardships. In rearing such a large family they had toiled hard, but, in looking back over the last 60 years, what joy, too, had been theirs.
Mr Cleland feelingly responded. He thanked all present for the manner in which they had drunk the toast, for the way they had entertained "Mother" and him, and for the valuable gifts received. They were indeed happy to have all their family gathered round them once again. Mr. Cleland then proposed the health of "Harry and Bob" (Mrs. Cleland's two brothers who were present at their wedding 6o years ago) and coupled with them the names of their wives. This also was drunk with musical honours. Mr. Harry Wilesmith responded. Other toasts were: "The Cleland family," responded to by Mrs. Michael, the "Grandchildren and Great-grandchild-ren." responded to by Austin Cleland (eldest grandson), and "The in-laws," responded to in humorous vein by Messrs. W. Sorenson.and T. Beck.
The chairman then read over 30 telegrams and numerous letters of congratulations. The ceremony of cutting the cake was then performed by Mrs. Cleland who remarked that it was the fourth wedding cake she had been called upon to cut. Music and singing continued to a later hour
and the party concluded after the singing of "Auld Lang Syne."
EARLY DAYS RECALLED
Mr. William Henry Cleland was born in New Norfolk, Tasmania, in 1863. As a youth of 19, he accompanied by his cousin, the late Rowland Matthews, of Herberton, arrived in Port Douglas. At that time the mining fields of the Hinterland were rich and prosperous, so the two young men made their way over the Port Douglas range to Herberton. It was at the busy mining town of Watsonville that Will Cleland met and wooed and won his bride, Catherine, the elder daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Wilesmith, their marriage taking place on August 30, 1887, at Watsonville. Mrs. Cleland is a native of North Queensland. She was born on the Gilbert River in 1870, and has lived all her life in the north.
Before his marriage and for many years after Mr. Cleland was a carrier on the road between Port Douglas and the mining fields of the Hinterland. Those who knew him best could tell of his great love of a "good horse." It was no idle boast that he possessed the best team on the road. He was well known for his horsemanship, too, and many are the tales he can tell of those "Good old Days." After leaving Watsonville Mr. Cleland was associated with the Chillagoe Co., and for many years resided in Calcifier, here he carried on mining at the Harper, Boomerang and Forty-One mines. In 1906 he moved to Chillagoe, where he was again engaged in mining, being employed
successively in Ruddygore, Girofla and Lady Jane mines.
When the Chillagoe smelters, were closed down Mr. Cleland was appointed as overseer of the Chillagoe Shire Council. In 1918 the Cairns Shire Council called applications for a Health Inspector and Assistant Overseer. Mr. Cleland was the successful applicant so the family moved to Gordonvale. He retired from the council in 1932 but could not content himself with an inactive life, so became Bridge Inspector for the M.R.C. until his final retirement in 1938.
Mr. and Mrs. Cleland can boast of 15 grandchildren and five great-grand-children. One grandson paid the supreme sacrifice in the last war and one was awarded a D.F.C. for distinguished service in the Pathfinders. Mr. Cleland's main pastime these days is reading, while Mrs. Cleland whiles away her leisure hours in the garden. Her love for gardening and flowers is a passion, and her name still figures, prominently in the list of prime-winners at horticultural shows. This fine old couple still enjoy good health.
