Mr. John Duke Little, one of the early pioners of the Hodgkinson goldfield and a brother of the late W. C. Little, once State Parliamentary member for the Woothakata electorate, died in Mareeba Hospital, on Sunday morning, aged 84 years. He had been in the hospital for six years.

Mr. John Duke Little, one or the early pioneers of the Hodgkinson goldfield, and a brother of the late W. C. Little, once State Parliamentary member for the Wootliakata electorate, died in Mareeba Hospital last week, aged 84 years. He was one of North Queensland's early pioneers and was a mine owner on Charters Towers in the early days. He was attracted further north when the Palmer broke out and later with his partners, the late William Clancy Little and the late J. J. Byers, conducted a big butchering business on the Hodgkinson when It first broke out. It was a wonderful surface show and literally you could hang your hat on the face of the out crop when the stone was chipped away the gold occurring In rich seams. The firm acquired many mining Interests Including the Flying Pig over which there was a terrifically expensive lawsuit. By the time the case was finished the gold had petered out of the claim and it was valueless. Mr. Little was well known and esteemed and only retired from active life about eight years ago.

Mr.H. J. Stark
Mr. H. J. Stark, whose death is announced from Toowoomba, had had a business association- in that city extending over 29 years. He was born at Falkirk, Scotland, in 1858, and was only 14 years of age when he arrived in Brisbane. He obtained a position as an assistant with D. L. Brown and Co., known to-day as Thomas Brown and Sons, Ltd. He remained with that firm for some years until he accepted a position with Scott, Dawson and Stewart, now Known as D and W. Murray, Ltd., Brisbane, as manager of one of the principal departments. Subsequently he went to Toowoomba, and in 1905, with Mr David Crammond, purchased the business of Billington and Co-, drapers, at the corner of Ruthven and Margaret streets. The late Mr. Stark was a keen worker for the Toowoomba Ambulance. For 21 years he was a member of the committee, and had been treasurer since September, 1939. In his day Mr. Stark was an outstanding bowler. He had been a member of two Toowoomba clubs. He was also a member of the Downs Club and of the Toowoomba Turf Club. Mr. Stark is survived by his widow and two sons, Dr. A. W. B. Stark (Brisbane) and Mr. Herbert J. Stark (Rockhamnton). A brother, Mr. Robert B. Stark, a partner of the Brisbane firm of Allan and Stark, died recently. One of his sisters is married to Mr. James Allan, one of the principals of the same firm.

BUNDABERG'S GRAND OLD MAN
BUNDABERG. August 1.
Mr. William Howard, Bundaberg's grand old man, died at the age of 92 at the residence of his son at Elliott Heads. Mr. Howard was a native of Sydney and came to Queensland when young. The town of Howard was named after him. Deceased blazed the trail through the Isis and spread the news of its wonderful possibility. In his endeavours fully to explore the district he often was out of touch with his fellow men for long periods. He was the first white man to set foot in Goodnight Scrub.
